CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

2.2L Engine

See Figure 2

  1. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the valve cover bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the valve cover by tapping it with a rubber mallet. This must be done to break the seal. DON'T attempt to pry the cover off, as it is easily damaged.
  8.

  1. Clean the sealing surface on the head and the valve cover with a de-greaser.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Attach a new gasket in the mating area of the head.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve cover to the head, tighten the cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the PCV valve.
  6.  
  7. Add engine oil if needed. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  

2.5L Engine

See Figure 3

  1. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly, being sure to tag all disconnected hoses for reassembly purposes.
  4.  
  5. Remove the PCV valve and hose from the valve cover grommet.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and the locating clips. Be sure to tag the wires so that they may be attached properly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankcase vent tube from the cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the EGR valve.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cover retaining bolts, then the valve cover by tapping it with a rubber mallet. This must be done to break the seal. DON'T attempt to pry the cover off, as it is easily damaged.
  14.  
  15. Clean the mating surface on the head and valve cover assembly.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install a new valve cover gasket on the cylinder head mating surface, then the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve cover bolts, tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  4.

  1. Install the EGR valve with a new gasket.
  2.  
  3. Install the crankcase vent tube to the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Attach the spark plug wires to the spark plugs, then attach the clip on the cover.
  6.  
  7. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine, check for leaks.
  10.  

2.8L Engine

See Figures 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2.  
  3. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly, being sure to tag all disconnected hoses for reassembly purposes.
  6.  

If equipped with an MFI system, remove any component which will interfere with the valve cover removal.

  1. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and the locating clips. Be sure to tag the wires so that they may be attached properly.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the accelerator linkage and springs from the carburetor.
  4.  
  5. If your vehicle has an automatic transaxle, disconnect the T.V. (throttle valve) linkage at the carburetor.
  6.  
  7. If your vehicle has cruise control, remove the diaphragm actuator mounting bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the air management valve and the necessary hoses (**see Section** 4).
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover retaining bolts, then remove the valve cover. If the cover sticks, tap it loose with a rubber mallet. DON'T attempt to pry it off of the head, as the cover may be easily damaged.

To install:
  1. Clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and intake manifold with degreaser.
  2.  
  3. Place RTV sealer all around the valve cover sealing surface. When going around the holes always follow the inboard side of the holes.
  4.  
  5. Install the cover and tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the front engine strut bracket-to-cylinder head. Tighten the bolts to 35 ft., lbs. (48 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect all the vacuum hoses and the spark plug wires.
  10.  
  11. Install the front engine strut at the radiator support and engine bracket.
  12.  
  13. Install the air cleaner.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine, check for leaks.
  16.  

3.0L and 3.8L Engines
FRONT COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the crankcase breather tube.
  6.  
  7. Remove the spark plug wire harness cover and disconnect the spark plug wires at the spark plugs.
  8.  
  9. Remove the valve cover nuts, washers, seals and valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install a new gasket to the clean mating area of the cylinder head, then put the valve cover on.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve cover seals, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wire harness on the valve cover, then insert the wires in there proper places. Connect the plug wires to the spark plugs.
  6.  
  7. Connect the crankcase breather tube.
  8.  
  9. Fill the engine oil to the proper fill mark, connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine, check for leaks.
  12.  

REAR COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the C 3 I ignition coil module, the spark plug cables, the wiring connectors, the EGR solenoid wiring and vacuum hoses.
  6.  

If equipped with an MFI system, remove any component which will interfere with the valve cover removal.

  1. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Remove the alternator's wiring connectors, then the mounting bolt and swing the alternator toward the front of the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the power steering pump from the belt tensioner (move it aside) and the belt tensioner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine lift bracket and the rear alternator brace.
  8.  
  9. Drain the cooling system below the level of the heater hose, then disconnect the throttle body heater hoses.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover nuts, the washers, the seals, the valve cover and the gasket.
  12.  
  13. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  14.  
  15. To install, use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the valve cover nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm.).
  16.  

3.1L Engine (VIN T)
FRONT COVER
  1. Release fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  6.  
  7. Drain the cooling system.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the ignition wire clamps from the coolant tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the coolant tube mount at head and coolant tube from each end.
  12.  
  13. Remove the coolant tube at the coolant pump and remove the tube.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition wire guide.
  16.  
  17. Remove the spark plug wire harness cover and disconnect the spark plug wires at the spark plugs, as needed.
  18.  
  19. Remove the valve cover nuts, washers, seals and valve cover.
  20.  
  21. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install a new gasket to the clean mating area of the cylinder head, then put the valve cover on.
  2.  
  3. Install the valve cover seals, washers and nuts. Tighten the nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wire harness on the valve cover, then insert the wire in there proper places. Attach the spark plug wires to the plugs if removed.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition wires and guides.
  8.  
  9. Attach the air cleaner assembly on the engine.
  10.  
  11. Fill the coolant system.
  12.  
  13. Fill the engine oil to the proper fill mark, connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  
  15. Start the engine, top off the cooling system, then check for leaks.
  16.  

REAR COVER
  1. Release fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system below the level of the heater hose.
  4.  
  5. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hoses at the intake plenum.
  8.  
  9. Remove the airflow tube.
  10.  
  11. Remove the EGR valve crossover pipe.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition wire guide.
  14.  
  15. Tag and remove the ignition wires.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the coolant hoses at the throttle body.
  18.  
  19. Tag and disconnect all electrical connectors to throttle body and that will ease the operation by moving aside.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the throttle body cables.
  22.  
  23. Remove the bracket at the right side of the intake plenum.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect the power brake booster supply hose.
  26.  
  27. Remove the serpentine belt.
  28.  
  29. Remove the coolant recovery bottle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe.
  32.  
  33. Remove the alternator and support it out of the way.
  34.  
  35. Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover.
  36.  
  37. Remove the valve cover nuts, the washers, the seals, the valve cover and the gasket.
  38.  
  39. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  40.  

To install:
  1. Use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the valve cover nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm.).
  2.  
  3. Insert the PCV valve.
  4.  
  5. Install the alternator, exhaust crossover and coolant recovery tank.
  6.  
  7. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Attach the brake booster hose.
  10.  
  11. Install the bracket to the right side of the intake plenum.
  12.  
  13. Connect the throttle body cables, electrical connectors and hoses.
  14.  
  15. Install the ignition wires and guides.
  16.  
  17. Install the EGR valve crossover pipe and the airflow tube.
  18.  
  19. Install the vacuum hoses.
  20.  
  21. Fill the radiator and check for leaks.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable, install air cleaner. Tighten the air cleaner bolt to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).
  24.  

3.1L Engine (VIN M)
FRONT COVER

See Figure 6

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system to a level below the coolant pipe on the front of the engine.
  4.  
  5. Remove the coolant bypass hose clamp at the coolant tube.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two bolts and nut securing the coolant tube to the cylinder head and position the tube out of the way.
  8.  
  9. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the PCV valve from the valve cover.
  12.  
  13. Remove the four valve cover bolts and remove the valve cover.
  14.

  1. Remove the rocker arm nuts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
  2.  
  3. Coat all the valve train components with engine oil prior to installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the pushrods and install the rocker arms on the studs. Install the rocker arm balls and mounting nuts. Make sure the pushrods are properly seated in the lifter and rocker arm. Tighten the mounting nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the valve cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the PCV valve to the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Position the coolant tube and connect the thermostat bypass hose.
  12.  
  13. Install the coolant tube mounting nut and bolts. Tighten the screw at the water pump to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm), the bolt at the corner of the cylinder head to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and the nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Refill the cooling system.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  
  19. Start the vehicle and verify no leaks.
  20.  

REAR COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and upper intake plenum wire retainer and position out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the power brake booster vacuum pipe from the intake plenum.
  6.  
  7. Remove the serpentine belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect and remove the ignition assembly and EVAP canister purge solenoid as an assembly.
  12.  
  13. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the four valve cover bolts and remove the valve cover.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rocker arm nuts, balls, rocker arms and pushrods.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
  2.  
  3. Coat all the valve train components with engine oil prior to installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the pushrods and install the rocker arms on the studs. Install the rocker arm balls and mounting nuts. Make sure the pushrods are properly seated in the lifter and rocker arm. Tighten the mounting nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the valve cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the alternator.
  10.  
  11. Install the serpentine belt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the power brake booster vacuum pipe to the plenum.
  14.  
  15. Install the EVAP solenoid and ignition assembly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the spark plug wires to the wire retainers on the plenum and the spark plugs.
  18.  
  19. Refill the cooling system.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.  
  23. Start the vehicle, top off the cooling system, then verify there are no leaks.
  24.  

3.3L Engine
FRONT COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the alternator brace bolt and brace.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine torque strut at the radiator support, then the strut bracket bolts and nuts from the intake and exhaust manifolds.
  8.  
  9. Remove the engine lift bracket, then loosen the engine lift bracket brace bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the spark plug wire harness cover and disconnect the spark plug wires at the spark plugs.
  12.  
  13. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the valve cover nuts, washers, seals and valve cover.
  16.  
  17. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Install a new gasket to the cylinder head mating surface, then install the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Apply thread locking compound to the bolt threads.
  4.  
  5. Insert the valve cover retainer bolts. Tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the spark plug wires to the plugs and cover.
  8.  
  9. Install the engine lift bracket brace bolt, then the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Secure the engine strut mount bracket bolts and nuts to the intake and exhaust manifolds.
  12.  
  13. Attach the engine torque strut at the radiator support, tighten the bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Position the alternator, then install the mounting bolts and support brace.
  16.  
  17. Install the serpentine drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Install the negative battery cable, start engine and check for leaks.
  20.  

REAR COVER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the serpentine drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the power steering pump bolts and slide the pump forward. Remove the pump braces.
  6.  
  7. Remove the power steering pump from the belt tensioner (move it aside) and the belt tensioner assembly.
  8.  
  9. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the valve cover nuts, the washers, the seals, the valve cover and the gasket.
  12.  
  13. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.
  14.  

To install:
  1. To install, use a new gasket and reverse the removal procedures. Tighten the valve cover nuts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm.).
  2.  
  3. Reinstall the power steering pump and install the serpentine drive belt.
  4.  
  5. Install the negative battery cable, start engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

4.3L Diesel Engine

See Figure 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fuel injection lines.
  4.  
  5. When removing the right rear cover, disconnect the crankcase ventilation components.
  6.  
  7. Remove the forward engine support strut, which is bolted to the radiator support strut and an engine bracket.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt and remove the strut bracket from the engine.
  10.  
  11. If necessary, remove any additional piece(s) which may interfere with removal of the cover.
  12.  
  13. Clean all the dirt from around the mating area of the valve cover.
  14.  
  15. Unbolt and remove the cover. If the cover sticks, tap it loose with a rubber mallet. DON'T attempt to pry it off of the head, as the cover may be easily damaged.

  1. Raise the jack until it just starts to lift the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two front body mount bolts from the cradle, along with the cushions and the retainers. Remove the cushions from the bolts.
  4.  
  5. Thread the body mount bolts (with the retainers) back into place, making sure to turn them at least three full turns each.
  6.  
  7. Carefully and slowly lower the jack until the cradle contacts the retainers. While you are lowering the jack, be sure to watch for any component interference and correct as required.
  8.  


CAUTION
DO NOT attempt to lower the cradle without the bolts and retainers in place, as this could cause damage of various underhood components.

  1. Unbolt and remove the cover. If the cover sticks, tap it loose with a rubber mallet. DON'T attempt to pry it off of the head, as the cover may be easily damaged.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean the head and valve cover gasket surfaces. Apply RTV sealer or an equivalent to the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Lubricate the entire valve cover attaching bolt with GM part no. 1052080 or an equivalent.
  4.  
  5. If the right cover was removed, install the crankcase ventilation components.
  6.  
  7. Install the injection lines.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
