REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



You may want to place a rag over the steering column to help prevent scratches. With vehicles equipped with tilt steering, it will help to lower the steering wheel all the way, then unscrew the tilt wheel lever. Century

1982-92 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the speedometer cable and pull it through the firewall.
  4.  
  5. Remove the left side hush panel retaining screws and nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right side hush panel retaining screws and nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shift indicator cable clip.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering column trim plate.
  12.  
  13. Put the gear selector in L . Remove the retaining screws and gently pull out the instrument panel trim plate.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the parking brake cable at the lever by pushing it forward and sliding it from its slot.
  16.  
  17. Unbolt and lower the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Remove the gauge cluster retaining screws. Pull the cluster out far enough to disconnect any wires. Remove the instrument cluster.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the gauge cluster, connect the electrical connectors and install the retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Position the steering column and install the retaining bolts.
  4.  
  5. Connect the parking brake cable at the lever.
  6.  
  7. Put the gear selector in L . Install the instrument panel trim plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column trim plate.
  10.  
  11. Install the shift indicator cable clip.
  12.  
  13. Install the right side hush panel retaining screws and nut.
  14.  
  15. Install the left side hush panel retaining screws and nut.
  16.  
  17. Pull the speedometer cable through the firewall and connect to the speedometer.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

1993-96 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left and right side sound insulators. Lower the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake release cable.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the harness connectors at the junction block.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speaker connections, then remove the A/C vacuum harness and temperature door cable.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the engine harness connectors, then the antenna cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove the side window defogger hoses. Remove the bolts and screws holding the bulkhead connector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bulkhead connector from the instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the windshield wiper motor and the brake master cylinder connectors, then unfasten the hoodlamp connection.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the harness at the cowl by pulling the sides of the black clip out while pulling up on the clip.
  20.  
  21. To remove the harness, feed it throughout the cowl.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten the defroster/speaker grille by lifting up and out. Remove the two nuts on both inner sides of the steering column opening.
  24.  
  25. Unscrew the three screws at the bottom of the instrument panel, then remove the six screws at the defroster opening on top of the instrument panel.
  26.  
  27. Remove the instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Reverse to install. Connect the negative battery cable, reset the clock and radio.
  30.  

Celebrity
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove instrument panel hush panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove vent control housing, as required.
  6.  
  7. On non-air conditioning vehicles, remove steering column trim cover screws and lower cover with vent cables attached. On air conditioning vehicles, remove trim cover attaching screws and remove cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove instrument cluster trim pad.
  10.  
  11. Remove ash tray, retainer and fuse block, disconnect wires as necessary.
  12.  
  13. Remove headlight switch knob and instrument panel trim plate. Disconnect electrical connectors of any accessory switches in trim plate.
  14.  
  15. Remove cluster assembly and disconnect speedometer cable, PRNDL and cluster electrical connectors.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install cluster assembly and connect speedometer cable, PRNDL and cluster electrical connectors.
  2.  
  3. Install headlight switch knob and instrument panel trim plate. Connect electrical connectors of any accessory switches in trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Install ash tray, retainer and fuse block, connect electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Install instrument cluster trim pad.
  8.  
  9. On non-air conditioned vehicles, raise the cover with vent cables attached and install steering column trim cover screws. On air conditioned vehicles, install trim cover and attaching screws.
  10.  
  11. If removed, install vent control housing.
  12.  
  13. Install instrument panel hush panel.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

Ciera and Cruiser
1982-92 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove left instrument panel trim pad.
  2.  
  3. Remove instrument panel cluster trim cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect speedometer cable at transaxle or cruise control transducer, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove steering column trim cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect shift indicator clip from steering column shift bowl.
  10.  
  11. Remove 4 screws attaching cluster assembly to instrument panel.
  12.  
  13. Pull assembly out far enough to reach behind cluster and disconnect speedometer cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove cluster assembly.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Install the cluster assembly.
  2.  
  3. Connect the speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Install the 4 screws attaching cluster assembly to instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Connect shift indicator clip to steering column shift bowl.
  8.  
  9. Install the steering column trim cover.
  10.  
  11. Connect the speedometer cable at the transaxle or cruise control transducer, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Install the instrument panel cluster trim cover.
  14.  
  15. Install the left instrument panel trim pad.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

1993-96 MODELS
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left and right sound insulators. Unfasten the accessory trim plate and remove the ash tray assembly.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the connection to the lighter. Remove the instrument cluster trim plate and cluster assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the shift indicator clip from the steering column shift bowl, then remove the shift trim collar and trim plate, along with the lower steering column.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speaker grilles by unfastening the mounting screws.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the ventilation system, pull the control assembly from the dash, then disconnect the wiring harness from the control assembly. Unfasten the temperature control cables.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the steering column wiring harness from the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the parking brake release handle.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the side window defogger hoses from the heater outlet. Unfasten the bolts which attach the wiper motor to the cowl.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the bulkhead connector at the cowl panel. Remove the lower instrument panel bolts.
  20.  
  21. Loosen, then remove the defroster grille by carefully prying the grille with a small prytool.
  22.  
  23. Remove the upper instrument panel screws.
  24.  
  25. Open the hood, then remove the clip in the engine compartment that holds the wiring harness to the cowl. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors in the engine compartment, then pull it through the cowl on the passengers side.
  26.  
  27. Tilt the instrument panel forwards, then remove the remaining electrical connections. Remove the instrument panel.
  28.  
  29. Reverse to install, then connect the negative battery cable. Reset the clock and radio along with any other accessories.
  30.  

6000
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and remove the center and left side lower instrument panel trim plate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screws holding the instrument cluster to the instrument panel carrier.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster lens to gain access to the speedometer head and gauges.
  6.  
  7. Remove right side and left side hush panels, steering column trim cover and disconnect parking brake cable and vent cables, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove steering column retaining bolts and drop steering column.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect temperature control cable, inner-to-outer air conditioning wire harness and inner-to-outer air conditioning vacuum harness, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect chassis harness behind left lower instrument panel and ECM/PCM connectors behind glove box. Disconnect instrument panel harness at cowl.
  14.  
  15. Remove center instrument panel trim plate, radio, if equipped, and disconnect neutral switch and brake light switch.
  16.  
  17. Remove upper and lower instrument panel retaining screws, nuts and bolts.
  18.  
  19. Pull instrument panel assembly out far enough to disconnect ignition switch, headlight dimmer switch and turn signal switch. Disconnect all other accessory wiring and vacuum lines necessary to remove instrument panel assembly.
  20.  
  21. Remove instrument panel assembly with wiring harness.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install instrument panel assembly with wiring harness.
  2.  
  3. Connect ignition switch, headlight dimmer switch and turn signal switch. Connect all other accessory wiring and vacuum lines.
  4.  
  5. Install upper and lower instrument panel retaining screws, nuts and bolts.
  6.  
  7. Connect neutral switch and brake light switch. Install the radio, if equipped, and install center instrument panel trim plate.
  8.  
  9. Connect chassis harness behind left lower instrument panel and ECM/PCM connectors behind glove box. Connect instrument panel harness at cowl.
  10.  
  11. Connect temperature control cable, inner-to-outer air conditioning wire harness and inner-to-outer air conditioning vacuum harness, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Raise the steering column and install retaining bolts.
  14.  
  15. Install right side and left side hush panels, steering column trim cover and connect parking brake cable and vent cables, if equipped.
  16.  
  17. Install the instrument cluster lens.
  18.  
  19. Install the screws holding the instrument cluster to the instrument panel carrier.
  20.  
  21. Install the center and left side lower instrument panel trim plate.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable, then reset the clock and radio.
