Power Steering Pump

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Gasoline Engines

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the hoses at the pump and tape the openings shut to prevent contamination. Position the disconnected lines in a raised position to prevent leakage.
  4.  
  5. Remove the pump belt.
  6.

  1. On some 4-cylinder models it may be necessary to:
    1. Remove the radiator hose clamp bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the right side fender splash shield.
    4.

  3. On 2.8L models:
    1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the electrical connector at the blower motor.
    4.  
    5. Drain the cooling system, then remove the heater hose at the water pump.
    6.

  5. On 3.0L models, remove the alternator.
  6.  

Removing a component such as the alternator may make the job easier on any model.

  1. Loosen the retaining bolts and any braces, then remove the pump.
  2.

  1. Remove the pump pulley and attach it to the new pump, as illustrated.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Install the pump and brackets to the engine and hand-tighten the retaining bolts.

  1. On 3.0L models:
    1. Install the alternator support to the engine.
    2.  
    3. Position the alternator adjustment bracket over the front pump adjustment bracket.
    4.  
    5. Install the long bolt and alternator bracket, front pump bracket, rear pump bracket, and alternator support to the engine.
    6.  
    7. Attach the remaining alternator adjustment bracket bolt.
    8.  
    9. Install the power steering pump belt.
    10.  
    11. Raise the car, then install the rear pump adjustment bracket-to-pump nut.
    12.

  3. Connect and tighten the hose fittings.
  4.  
  5. On 3.0L models, lower the vehicle, then install the alternator and belt.
  6.  
  7. On some 4-cylinder models, you will need to install the radiator hose clamp bolt.
  8.  
  9. On 2.8L models:
    1. Connect the water hose to the water pump.
    2.  
    3. Install and connect the blower motor.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Refill the pump with fluid and bleed the system.
  12.  
  13. Install the pump belt and adjust the tension.
  14.  
  15. On 3.0L models, install the air cleaner assembly.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.  

Diesel Engine

See Figure 6

  1. Remove the drive belt.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right front wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front pulley and harmonic balancer.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the hoses from the pump.
  10.  
  11. Drain the fluid from the power steering reservoir.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the pressure line at the pump.
  14.  
  15. Remove the one bolt and two nuts from the rear bracket.
  16.  
  17. Remove the pump with the brackets.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pulley and brackets.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the brackets and pulley to the pump.
  2.  
  3. Attach the pump with the brackets on the engine.
  4.  
  5. Install the two nuts and one bolt on the rear bracket, then tighten.
  6.  
  7. Connect the pressure line and tighten. Then connect the reservoir line to the pump.
  8.  
  9. Install the harmonic balancer with the bolt and washer, tighten the bolt to 203-350 ft. lbs. (275-475 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach the pulley, tighten the four bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the right front wheel, install the lug nuts.
  14.  
  15. Lower the car, tighten the lug nuts.
  16.  
  17. Install the drive belt.
  18.  
  19. Fill the power steering reservoir.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the system.
  22.

BLEEDING



See Figure 7

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle enough to get the wheels off the ground.
  4.  
  5. Turn the steering wheel completely to the left.
  6.  
  7. Fill the fluid reservoir to the FULL COLD level, make sure to leave the cap off.
  8.  
  9. Let the fluid stand undisturbed for two minutes, then crank the engine for about two seconds. Refill reservoir if necessary.

  1. With an assistant checking the fluid level and condition, turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock at least 20 times, while the engine remains off.
  2.  
  3. Start the engine, then while idling maintain the fluid level. Install the cap.
  4.  
  5. Return the wheels to the center, then lower the front end to the ground.
  6.  
  7. Turn the wheels to the left and right, checking the fluid level and refilling if necessary.
  8.
