CAUTION
On vehicles equipped with an SIR (air bag) system, disable the system before proceeding, by following the instructions at the beginning of this section. Failure to do so could result in accidental inflation of the air bag and personal injury.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disable the SIR system if equipped with an air bag.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.
  5. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, follow the special instructions in this section on steering wheel removal.
  6.

CAUTION
Whenever carrying a live inflator module, make sure that the bag and opening are pointed away from you. Never carry the module by the wires or connector on the underside of the module. In case of an accidental deployment, the bag will deploy with minimal amount of injury. When placing the live inflator on a bench or any other surface, always face the bag and trim cover up, away from the surface. Never rest a steering column assembly on the steering wheel with the inflator module face down on the column vertical. This will allow free space for the bag to expand in case of accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury could result.

  1. Remove the steering wheel as previously outlined. Remove the trim cover.
  2.
  3. Loosen the cover screws. Pry the cover off with a flat-bladed tool, then lift the cover off the shaft.
  4.
  5. Position the U-shaped lockplate compressing tool on the end of the steering shaft and compress the lock plate by turning the shaft nut clockwise, then pry the wire snapring out of the shaft groove.

  1. Pull the switch connector out the mast jacket and tape the upper part to facilitate switch removal. Attach a long piece of wire to the turn signal switch connector. When installing the turn signal switch, feed this wire through the column first, and then use this wire to pull the switch connector into position. On tilt wheels, place the turn signal and shifter housing in low position and remove the harness cover.
  2.
  3. Remove the three switch mounting screws. Remove the switch by pulling it straight up while guiding the wiring harness cover through the column.
  4.

To install:
  1. Install the replacement switch by working the connector and cover down through the housing and under the bracket. On tilt models, the connector is worked down through the housing, under the bracket, and then the cover is installed on the harness.
  2.
  3. Install the switch mounting screws and the connector on the mast jacket bracket. Install the column-to-dash trim plate.
  4.
  5. Install the flasher knob and the turn signal lever.
  6.
  7. With the turn signal lever in neutral and the flasher know out, slide the thrust washer, upper bearing preload spring, and canceling cam onto the shaft.
  8.
  9. Position the lock plate on the shaft and press it down until a new snapring can be inserted in the shaft groove. Always use a new snapring when assembling.
  10.
  11. Install the cover and the steering wheel.
  12.
  13. Enable the SIR system if an air bag is present.
  14.
