REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




NOTE
GM specifies that before installing a door trim panel to the door, the old trim panel retainers MUST be discarded and replaced with NEW retainers. If new retainers are not used, the trim panel will not be properly secured to the door.

Front
CHEVROLET
  1. If equipped with a Theftlock® radio, disable this anti-theft feature. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door trim panel and water deflector as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner belt sealing strip using the following procedure:
    1. Lower the window to the bottom of the door.
    2.  
    3. With the door trim panel removed, it may be necessary to remove the outside rear view mirror using the procedures found in this section.
    4.  
    5. Remove the energy absorber (foam pad), if equipped.
    6.  
    7. Remove the sealing strip by lifting off the weld flange.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the outer belt sealing strip by removing the retaining screws from each end.
  8.  
  9. Remove the window run channel. This is the channel (weather-strip) that runs around the door frame. Remove the retainer bolts at the ends of the weather-strip, rotate the legs outboard and pull out from the window frame.
  10.  
  11. Drill out the pull rivets.
  12.  
  13. Remove the window from the regulator sash.
  14.  
  15. Remove the window from the vehicle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the sash insulators, if necessary.
  18.

To install:

  1. Install the sash insulators to the bottom edge of the window and snap to secure.
  2.  
  3. Position the window between the inner and outer panels. Point the lower front corner of the window down and pass through the belt opening, aligning the edges with the door window channel. Turn the window to the horizontal position and align the holes in the window with holes in the regulator sash.
  4.  
  5. Install replacement pull rivets.
  6.  
  7. Install the window run channel, the outer, then the inner belt sealing strips.
  8.  
  9. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  10.  
  11. Reposition the foam energy absorber pad, if equipped.
  12.  
  13. Install the door trim panel.
  14.  

OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME-COUPE

The door window consists of a frameless piece of solid tempered safety glass. The guides on the glass are bonded on and are not serviceable except by replacement of the window. The factory service replacement glass has the guide already installed. The door window and lower sash channel are removed from the door as a unit and replacement glass is installed as a bench operation.

  1. If equipped with a Theftlock® radio, disable this anti-theft feature. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door trim panel using the procedures found in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner belt sealing strip using the following procedure:
    1. Lower the window to the bottom of the door.
    2.  
    3. Remove the inner belt sealing strip retainer screw and remove the retainer.
    4.  
    5. Remove the inner belt sealing strip from the weld flange.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front window guide retainer. This is a vertical channel located on the door hinge side of the door. The window must be in the full up position to remove the guide retainer. Remove the retainer screws and remove the front window guide retainer.
  10.  
  11. Remove the window by raising half way and pushing on the rear guide retainer with a flat-bladed prytool to disengage from the channel retainer. Lift the window up on the inboard side of the door frame.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the window to the door, relocating the regulator arm roller to the sash channel.
  2.  
  3. Lower the window halfway and pull rearward on the window to engage the rear guide retainer to the channel retainer.
  4.  
  5. Install the front window guide retainer by lowering the window to 3 inches above the belt line and locating the retainer to the door.
  6.  
  7. Install the front window guide retainer noting the following:
    1. Position the front window guide retainer at the forward part of the window.
    2.  
    3. Slowly lower the window to properly align the retainer into position.
    4.  
    5. Install the retainer screws.
    6.  

  8.  


NOTE
For proper operation of the window, adjust as necessary.

  1. Adjust the door glass as follows.
    1. With the trim panel and water deflector still removed, loosen the front window guide retainer bolts.
    2.  
    3. Cycle the glass to the full DOWN position.
    4.  
    5. Adjust the top screws and then tighten the top retainer screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Cycle the window again to the full DOWN position.
    8.  
    9. Torque the bottom screws to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Recheck the glass for proper operation without binding.
    12.  

  2.  
  3. Install the inner belt sealing strip, water deflector and trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper door operation.
  6.  

OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME-sedan
  1. If equipped with a Theftlock® radio, disable this anti-theft feature. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door trim panel using the procedures found in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the outside mirror using the procedures found in this section.
  6.  
  7. Remove the door frame garnish moldings. These are the trim parts that run around the inside of the window frame. Use the following procedure.
    1. Remove the inner belt sealing strip.
    2.  
    3. Remove the trim panel applique by unsnapping the retainer clips.
    4.  
    5. Remove the garnish molding by gently prying away with a flat-blade trim removal tool.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the outer belt sealing strip.
  10.  
  11. Remove the inner belt sealing strip.
  12.  
  13. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the front window guide retainer. This is a vertical channel located on the door hinge side of the door. The window must be in the full up position to remove the guide retainer. Remove the retainer screws and remove the front window guide retainer.
  16.  
  17. Remove the door frame applique. This is the outside trim plate that runs from the belt line to the roof drip rail. Remove the screw cover, remove the screws and carefully work free the applique.
  18.  
  19. Remove the window from the regulator arm and door.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Install the window to the regulator arm and door.
  2.  
  3. Install the door frame applique panel.
  4.  
  5. Install the front window guide retainer.
  6.  
  7. Install the plastic sheet water deflector.
  8.  
  9. Install the inner and outer belt sealing strips.
  10.  
  11. Install the window frame garnish moldings.
  12.  
  13. Install the outside mirror using the procedures found in this section.
  14.  
  15. Install the door trim panel using the procedures found in this section.
  16.  

OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE
  1. If equipped with a Theftlock® radio, disable this anti-theft feature. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front door inner trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the inner belt sealing strip.
  8.  
  9. Remove the window-to-regulator bolts.
  10.  
  11. Lift and remove the front door window from the door.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install the front door window between the inner and outer panels.
  2.  
  3. Point the lower front corner of the front door window down and pass through the belt opening.
  4.  
  5. Align the edges with the front door window weather-strips.
  6.  
  7. Turn the window to a horizontal position and align the holes in the window with the holes in the window regulator. Make sure that the window clips are seated on the regulator carrier plate.
  8.  
  9. Install the window-to-regulator bolts, forward bolt first. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then install the rearward window-to-regulator bolt second and also torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Inspect both sealing lips on the outer belt sealing strip to make sure they are not rolled over and pointing downwards. If this condition is present, the window will not raise properly.
  12.  
  13. Install the inner sealing strip.
  14.  
  15. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  16.  
  17. Install the door trim panel.
  18.  

BUICK AND PONTIAC
  1. If equipped with a Theftlock® radio, disable this anti-theft feature. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door trim panel using the procedures found in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner sealing strip.
  6.  
  7. Remove the window-to-regulator bolts
  8.  
  9. Remove the window from the door.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Position the window between the inner and outer panels. Point the lower front corner of the window down and pass through the belt opening, aligning the edges with the door window channel. Turn the window to the horizontal position and align the holes in the window with holes in the regulator sash.
  2.  
  3. Install replacement pull rivets, as required.
  4.  
  5. Inspect both sealing lips on the outer belt sealing strip to make sure they are not rolled over and pointing downwards. If this condition is present, the window will not raise properly.
  6.  
  7. Install the window-to-regulator bolts, forward bolt first. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then install the rearward window-to-regulator bolt second and also torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the inner sealing strip.
  10.  
  11. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  12.  
  13. Install the door trim panel.
  14.  

Rear
CHEVROLET
  1. Remove the rear door trim panel using the following procedure.
    1. Remove the armrest pull cup retaining screw and lift out the pull cup.
    2.  
    3. Remove the inside door handle bezel screw and remove the bezel along with the power window switch, if equipped.
    4.  
    5. Detach the electrical connector, if equipped with power windows.
    6.  
    7. If equipped with window crank handles, remove the rear side door window regulator handle by unsnapping from the spindle.
    8.  
    9. Remove the trim panel screws.
    10.  
    11. Remove the trim panel by carefully prying the top of the trim panel to release the tabs and hooks from the door inner panel. Push up and pull the trim panel towards you to remove the trim panel.
    12.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the energy absorber (foam pad).
  4.  
  5. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the outer sealing strip by lifting it off the pinch-weld flange using a trim remover tool.
  8.  
  9. Drill out the pull rivets holding the metal brackets on the glass to the regulator assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disengage the metal brackets on the glass from the regulator assembly and remove the window from the vehicle.
  12.

To install:

  1. Renew the insulators in the brackets, if necessary.
  2.  
  3. Position the window between the inner and outer panels. Point the lower front corner of the window down and pass it through the belt opening, aligning the edges with the door window channel. Turn the window to the horizontal position and align the holes in the window brackets with the holes in the brackets on the window regulator.
  4.  
  5. Install new pull rivets.
  6.  
  7. Install the outer belt sealing strip by pressing in place.
  8.  
  9. Install the inner belt sealing strip. Engage each end of the sealing strip by pressing firmly onto the front and rear ends of the pinch-weld flange. Seat the entire length of the sealing strip, tapping along the strip with a rubber mallet.
  10.  
  11. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector and the foam energy absorber pad.
  12.  
  13. Install the door trim panel using the following procedure:
    1. Position the trim panel tabs and hooks to the slots in the door inner panel. Press down on the trim panel. Apply enough pressure to fully engage the three top tabs to the door inner panel.
    2.  
    3. Install the trim panel screws.
    4.  
    5. Install the window regulator handle, if equipped,.
    6.  
    7. Install the handle bezel, attaching the power window switch electrical connector, if equipped.
    8.  
    9. Install the armrest pull cup.
    10.

OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME
  1. Remove the window regulator handle, if equipped.
  2.  
  3. Remove the handle bezel screw (the door lock knob is located within the door handle bezel). Remove the inside handle bezel
  4.  
  5. If equipped with power windows, remove the switch plate mounting screws and remove the switch plate from the trim panel. Detach the electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws from the trim panel. Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully disengage the fasteners from the holes in the door inner panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the inner belt sealing strip by lowering the window to the bottom of the door and lifting the sealing strip off the pinch flange.
  10.  
  11. Remove the outer belt sealing strip by removing the retaining screw and lifting off the sealing strip off the pinch weld flange.
  12.  
  13. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the window regulator sash nuts, washer-like fasteners that hold the glass to the window regulator.
  16.  
  17. Lower the window to the bottom of the door and remove the front portion of the window weather-strip from the front of the door frame.
  18.  
  19. Lift the window upward and outboard of the door frame.
  20.

To install:

  1. Install the window to the door from the outboard side of the door frame. Lower the window to the bottom of the door. Align the glass to the regulator and install the regulator sash nuts. Tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  4.  
  5. Install the outer belt sealing strip by pressing in place.
  6.  
  7. Install the inner belt sealing strip. Engage each end of the sealing strip by pressing firmly onto the front and rear ends of the pinch-weld flange. Seat the entire length of the sealing strip, tapping along the strip with a rubber mallet.
  8.  
  9. Install the door trim panel, noting the following:
    1. Position the fasteners to the inner panel, align the trim panel and press in to secure. Install the trim panel screws
    2.  
    3. If equipped with power windows, attach the electrical connector and install the switch plate.
    4.  
    5. Install the handle bezel and retaining screw.
    6.  
    7. If equipped with manual windows, install the window crank handle
    8.

OLDSMOBILE INTRIGUE
  1. Remove the trim panel using the following procedure.
    1. Remove the rear door power window and door lock switch plate assembly from the trim panel. Use a protective layer of tape on a flat-bladed tool. Insert the tool at the rear of the switch plate releasing the switch plate retainer. Lift the rear of the switch plate.
    2.  
    3. Detach the electrical connector(s).
    4.  
    5. Remove the door handle bezel.
    6.  
    7. Remove the door trim panel screw located behind the door handle bezel.
    8.  
    9. Remove the door trim panel screws located by the armrest handle.
    10.  
    11. Using a trim panel tool, carefully work around the panel, disengaging the fasteners.
    12.  
    13. Remove the trim panel by pulling straight off the door. Detach the electrical connectors
    14.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the inner sealing strip by lifting off the pinch weld flange
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining screw from the outer sealing strip and using fingers, pull off the door flange.
  8.  
  9. Remove the window-to-regulator bolts and remove the rear door window from the rear door.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear door window between the inner and outer panels.
  2.  
  3. Point the lower front corner of the rear door window down and pass through the belt opening.
  4.  
  5. Align the edges with the rear door window weather-strips.
  6.  
  7. Turn the window to a horizontal position and align the holes in the window with the holes in the window regulator.
  8.  
  9. Install the window-to-regulator bolts, forward bolt first. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then install the rearward window-to-regulator bolt second and also torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the inner and outer sealing strips. Inspect both sealing lips on the outer belt sealing strip to make sure they are not rolled over and pointing downwards. If this condition is present, the window will not raise properly.
  12.  
  13. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear door trim panel. New panel retainers are recommended. Align the trim panel retainers to the door panel holes and press straight in. Press firmly to properly seat the fasteners into the holes in the door panel. Install the screws. Snap the power window switch back into place.
  16.  

BUICK AND PONTIAC
  1. Remove the trim panel using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the power window and door lock switch plate assembly from the trim panel. Use a protective layer of tape on a flat-bladed tool. Insert the tool at the rear of the switch plate and press forward to release the switch plate retainers.
    2.  
    3. Detach the electrical connector.
    4.  
    5. Locate the trim panel plugs that cover the screw heads. Carefully pry off the plugs and remove the trim panel screws.
    6.  
    7. Using a trim panel tool, carefully work around the panel, disengaging the fasteners.
    8.  
    9. Remove the trim panel by pulling straight off the door.
    10.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the plastic sheet water deflector.
  4.  
  5. Remove the energy absorber (foam pad).
  6.  
  7. Remove the inner sealing strip by lifting off the pinch weld flange
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining screw from the outer sealing strip and using fingers, pull off the door flange.
  10.  
  11. Remove the door frame molding. This is the vertical panel at the front of the door frame. The window should be in the full down position. It may be necessary to pull the door window weather-strip part way from the molding. On Pontiacs, there should be screws retaining the door frame molding. On Buicks, the door frame molding should slide upwards for removal.
  12.  
  13. Remove the window mounting bolts and remove the rear door window from the rear door.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear door window between the inner and outer panels.
  2.  
  3. Point the lower front corner of the rear door window down and pass through the belt opening.
  4.  
  5. Align the edges with the rear door window weather-strips.
  6.  
  7. Turn the window to a horizontal position and align the holes in the window with the holes in the window regulator.
  8.  
  9. Inspect both sealing lips on the outer belt sealing strip to make sure they are not rolled over and pointing downwards. If this condition is present, the window will not raise properly.
  10.  
  11. Install the window-to-regulator bolts, forward bolt first. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm). Then install the rearward window-to-regulator bolt second and also torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the inner and outer sealing strips and the energy absorber (foam pad).
  14.  
  15. Reposition the plastic sheet water deflector.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear door trim panel. New panel retainers are recommended. Align the trim panel retainers to the door panel holes and press straight in. Press firmly to properly seat the fasteners into the holes in the door panel. Install the screws and cover the heads with the trim panel plugs. Snap the power window switch back into place.
