Engine Oil Pressure Warning Indicator Switch

Print

The oil pressure warning indicator switch (also called a sender unit) receives battery voltage with the ignition switch in the RUN, BULB TEST or START position. The instrument cluster will turn the indicator ON during engine startup for a bulb check. The indicator is grounded by the fuel pump/oil pressure switch with a low oil pressure condition.

TESTING

"OIL" Pressure Indicator Stays ON, With Engine Running and Normal Oil Pressure
  1. Disconnect the fuel pump/engine oil pressure indicator switch at the engine.
  2.
  3. With the ignition switch in the ON position, and with the engine running, is the "OIL" indicator ON-
    1. If not, replace the indicator switch.
    2.
    3. If the "OIL" indicator is still ON, check the circuit for a short to ground somewhere between the instrument cluster connection and the oil pressure switch terminal A. If okay, the instrument cluster may need to be serviced.
    4.

  4.

"OIL" Pressure Indicator Not ON, With Ignition in ON Position, Engine Not Running
  1. Disconnect the fuel pump/engine oil pressure indicator switch.
  2.
  3. Connect a fused (3 Amp) jumper between terminal A (tan wire) and ground. With the ignition switch in the ON position, is the "OIL" indicator ON-
  4.
  5. If yes, check for a poor connection at the switch terminal. If okay, replace the switch.
  6.
  7. If no, look for an open between the instrument cluster connection and the oil pressure switch terminal. If okay, the instrument cluster may need to be serviced.
