Water Pump

Print

The water pump is a die cast, centrifugal-type with sealed bearings. Since it is pressed together, it must be serviced as a unit.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

All Engines Except Diesel
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.
  2.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. If necessary for access, remove the fan shroud and/or the upper radiator support.
  2.
  3. Loosen and remove the necessary drive belts.
  4.
  5. Remove the fan and water pump pulley.
  6.
  7. Remove the alternator and, if equipped, the power steering pump brackets as necessary and reposition the components for access to the water pump.
  8.
  9. Remove the heater hose and the lower radiator hose from the pump.
  10.
  11. Support the water pump and remove the retaining bolts, then remove the pump from the block. Because the water pump is held by bolts of various lengths, the bolt positions should be noted during removal.
  12.

To install:
  1. Be sure to remove all traces of gasket or sealer material from the gasket mating surfaces.
  2.
  3. Position the pump to the block using new gaskets. The gaskets may be held in place using small amount of RTV sealer or bolts may be held through the pump mounting holes in order to correctly position the gaskets.
  4.

Use an anti-seize compound on the water pump bolt threads.

  1. Install all of the water pump bolts and torque to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the heater hose and the lower radiator hose to the pump.
  4.
  5. As applicable, reposition and secure the alternator and/or power steering pump.
  6.
  7. Install the water pump pulley and the cooling fan.
  8.
  9. Install and adjust the drive belts.
  10.
  11. If removed, install the fan shroud and/or the upper radiator support.
  12.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable, then properly refill the engine cooling system.
  14.
  15. Start and run the engine, then check for leaks.

Diesel
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine cooling system.
  2.

CAUTION

This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, heater hose and the by-pass hose from the water pump.
  2.
  3. Remove the cooling fan assembly, the drive belts and the water pump pulley.
  4.
  5. Remove the alternator, the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor (if equipped) brackets, then position the components aside with their lines intact.
  6.
  7. Support the water pump and remove the mounting bolts, then remove the pump from the block.
  8.

To install:
  1. Be sure to remove all traces of gasket or sealer material from the gasket mating surfaces.

  3. Position the pump to the block using new gaskets. The gaskets may be held in place using small amount of RTV sealer or bolts may be held through the pump mounting holes in order to correctly position the gaskets.
  4.

Apply sealer to the lower water pump bolts.

  1. Install and tighten the water pump bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  2.
  3. Reposition and secure the A/C compressor, power steering pump and/or alternator and bracket(s).
  4.
  5. Install the water pump pulley, the cooling fan assembly and the drive belt.
  6.
  7. Adjust the drive belt tension.
  8.
