REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1964-65

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper most jacket clamp bolt and carefully bend the clamp away from the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the speedometer cable. Disconnect the oil pressure line at the gauge on the SS model.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws that attach the console to the instrument panel and lean the console forward onto the mast jacket. Remove the radio knobs before removing the console from the panel.
  8.  
  9. Disengage all cluster lamps, harness connectors, and the two harness retaining clips from the rear of the cluster.
  10.  
  11. Lift the console forward and upward to remove.
  12.  
  13. Unscrew and remove the cluster from the console.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Screw the cluster to the console.
  2.  
  3. Hold the console assembly just in front of the dash, then engage all cluster lamps, harness connectors and harness retaining clips at the rear of the cluster.
  4.  
  5. Position the console assembly and install the retaining screws, then install the radio knobs.
  6.  
  7. For SS vehicles, connect the oil pressure line to the gauge.
  8.  
  9. Connect the speedometer cable.
  10.  
  11. Bend the clamp back into position, then install the upper most jacket clamp bolt.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.

1966-67

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering coupling bolt and disconnect the steering shaft from the coupling.
  4.  
  5. Loosen the mast jacket lower clamp.
  6.  
  7. On air conditioned cars, remove the air conditioning center distribution duct.
  8.  
  9. Remove the radio rear support bracket screw.
  10.  
  11. Remove the mast jacket trim cover and the support clamp.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the set screw and remove the transmission dial indicator (if so equipped).
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the speedometer shaft at the speedometer head.
  16.  
  17. Remove the instrument panel attaching screws.
  18.  
  19. From under the console, remove the four lower retaining screws from the cluster housing.
  20.  
  21. With the mast jacket padded, pull the instrument panel from the console and lay forward on mast jacket.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the wiring harness, cluster lamps and wiring terminals from the rear of the cluster assembly.
  24.  
  25. Remove the four screws holding the upper section of the cluster housing to the panel and remove the cluster from the instrument panel.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Install the cluster to the instrument panel, then install the four screws holding the upper section of the cluster housing to the panel.
  2.  
  3. Connect the wiring harness, cluster lamps and wiring terminals to the rear of the cluster assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument panel from the padded mast jacket and position it to the console.
  6.  
  7. Under the console, install the four lower retaining screws to the cluster housing.
  8.  
  9. Install the instrument panel attaching screws.
  10.  
  11. Connect the speedometer shaft to the speedometer head.
  12.  
  13. If equipped, install the transmission dial indicator and tighten the set screw.
  14.  
  15. Install the mast jacket trim cover and the support clamp.
  16.  
  17. Install the radio rear support bracket screw.
  18.  
  19. On air conditioned cars, install the air conditioning center distribution duct.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the mast jacket lower clamp.
  22.  
  23. Connect the steering shaft to the coupling, then install the steering coupling bolt.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.

1968-69
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ash tray and retainer.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio knobs, nuts, electrical connectors, and the radio rear support. Remove the radio.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater control screws, then push the control head out of the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Lower the steering column. Remove the automatic transmission indicator cable from the steering column. Protect the steering column with a cloth.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument panel retaining screws at the top, bottom, and sides of the panel. Remove all attachments to the underside of the panel.
  12.  
  13. Lift the panel up and back slightly. Reach behind the cluster to remove the speedometer cable, support the panel on the protected steering column.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clips at the top of the cluster rear cover and remove all connectors at the rear of the cluster.
  16.  
  17. If equipped, remove the oil pressure fitting from the rear of the oil pressure gauge.
  18.  
  19. Remove the screws that secure the twin window clusters to the back of the instrument panel and remove the cluster.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Install the cluster, then install the screws that secure the twin window clusters to the back of the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, install the oil pressure fitting to the rear of the oil pressure gauge.
  4.  
  5. Install the clips to the top of the cluster rear cover and engage all connectors at the rear of the cluster.
  6.  
  7. Position the panel, then reach behind the cluster and connect the speedometer cable.
  8.  
  9. Install all attachments to the underside of the panel, then install the instrument panel retaining screws at the top, bottom, and sides of the panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the automatic transmission indicator cable to the steering column, the carefully raise the column into position.
  12.  
  13. Push the control head into the instrument panel, then install the heater control screws
  14.  
  15. Install the rear radio support, then install the radio knobs, nuts, electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Install the ash tray and retainer.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

1970-72

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Carefully lower and support the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake hand release.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument panel pad.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the radio speaker bracket from the instrument panel. Disconnect the speaker wire from the radio.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the air conditioning center outlet and the control head.
  14.  
  15. Remove the radio knobs, washers, bezels, and wiring.
  16.  
  17. Unbolt the radio braces. Roll the radio out from under the instrument panel.
  18.  
  19. Remove the six instrument panel bolts and roll out the instrument panel with the help of an assistant.
  20.  

To install:
  1. With the help of an assistant, carefully roll in the instrument panel, then install the six instrument panel bolts.
  2.  
  3. Roll the radio into position, then bolt the radio braces.
  4.  
  5. Install the radio knobs, washers, bezels, and wiring.
  6.  
  7. Connect the air conditioning center outlet and the control head.
  8.  
  9. Connect the speaker wire to the radio, then connect the radio speaker bracket to the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Install the instrument panel pad.
  12.  
  13. Connect the speedometer cable.
  14.  
  15. Connect the parking brake hand release.
  16.  
  17. Carefully raise and secure the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.

1973-77

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radio knobs and the clock set stem is so equipped.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument bezel retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Pull the bezel out to disconnect the tailgate release or rear defogger switch if so equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the instrument bezel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the retaining screws and remove the speedometer head.
  12.  
  13. Remove the retaining screws and remove the fuel gauge and tachometer if so equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the clock if so equipped.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the transmission shift indicator cable from the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the wiring and speedometer cable.
  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument cluster case.
  22.  

To install:
  1. Install the instrument cluster case.
  2.  
  3. Connect the wiring and speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Connect the transmission shift indicator cable to the steering column.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, install the clock.
  8.  
  9. Install the fuel gauge and, if equipped, the tachometer. Tighten the retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Install the speedometer head and tighten the retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. If equipped, connect the tailgate release or rear defogger switch.
  14.  
  15. Install the instrument bezel, then tighten the retaining screws.
  16.  
  17. If equipped, install the radio knobs and the clock set stem.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.

1978 And Later

MALIBU (STANDARD CLUSTER)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped, remove clock set stem knob.
  4.  
  5. Remove instrument bezel retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Pull bezel from panel slightly and disconnect rear defogger switch, if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove bezel.
  10.  
  11. Remove two screws at transmission selector indicator and lower indicator assembly to disconnect cable.
  12.  
  13. Remove three screws at windshield wiper/light switch mounting plate and pull assembly rearward for access to lower left cluster attaching bolt and nut.
  14.  
  15. Remove nuts attaching cluster to instrument panel.
  16.  
  17. Pull cluster rearward and disconnect the speedometer cable and all wiring and cables.
  18.  
  19. Remove cluster from vehicle.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Position the cluster in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Connect the speedometer cable and all wiring and cables.
  4.  
  5. Install the nuts attaching cluster to instrument panel, then install the lower left cluster attaching bolt and nut.
  6.  
  7. Secure the windshield wiper/light switch mounting plate using the mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Connect the cable, then install the two screws at transmission selector indicator and lower indicator assembly.
  10.  
  11. If equipped, connect rear defogger switch.
  12.  
  13. Install the bezel, then secure using the instrument bezel retaining screws.
  14.  
  15. If equipped, install the clock set stem knob.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18.

MALIBU (OPTIONAL CLUSTER) AND MONTE CARLO



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the clock set stem knob.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument bezel retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Slightly pull the bezel rearward. Disconnect the rear defogger switch. Remove the remote control mirror control knob, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dash panel bezel. Remove the speedometer assembly retaining screws. Pull the assembly from the cluster, disengage the speedometer cable from the assembly and remove the speedometer from the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel gauge or the tachometer retaining screws, disengage the electrical connectors and remove the components.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clock or voltmeter retaining screws, disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the components.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the transmission shift indicator cable from the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Disengage all wiring connectors and remove the cluster case.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Position the cluster and connect all wiring.
  2.  
  3. Connect the transmission shift indicator cable to the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Install the clock or voltmeter, engage the connectors and install the retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the fuel gauge or the tachometer, engage the connectors and install the retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Connect the speedometer cable to the speedometer assembly, then install the assembly to the cluster and tighten the retaining screws.
  10.  
  11. Connect the rear defogger switch, then if equipped, install the remote control mirror control knob.
  12.  
  13. Install the instrument bezel retaining screws.
  14.  
  15. Install the clock set stem knob, then connect the negative battery cable.
  16.
