REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1967-69 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the car safely using jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Matchmark and remove the driveshaft assembly. On floor shift models, remove the trim plate and shifter boot.
  6.  
  7. On 1968-69 models, it may be necessary to disconnect the exhaust pipe at the manifold.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the speedometer cable and, on floor shift models, disconnect the back-up light switch.
  10.  
  11. Remove the crossmember-to-frame bolts. On the floor shift models, remove the bolts holding the control lever support to the crossmember.
  12.  
  13. Remove the transmission mount bolts.
  14.  
  15. Using a suitable jack and a block of wood (to be placed between the jack and the engine for protection), raise the engine slightly and remove or relocate the crossmember.
  16.  
  17. Remove the shaft levers from the transmission side cover.
  18.  
  19. On floor shift models, remove the stabilizer rod (if so equipped) situated between the shift lever assembly and the transmission.
  20.  
  21. Remove the transmission-to-bellhousing bolts. Remove the top bolts first and insert guide pins into the holes, then remove the bottom bolts.
  22.  
  23. Carefully withdraw the transmission assembly by moving it back, then lower it from the vehicle.
  24.  

To install:
  1. Lift the transmission into position and carefully insert the mainshaft into the bellhousing.
  2.  
  3. Install the transmission-to-bellhousing bolts and lockwashers, then torque them to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the transmission shift levers to the side cover. On floor shift models, install the stabilizer rod (if so equipped).
  6.  
  7. Raise the engine slightly, position the crossmember and install the retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission mount bolts. On floor shift models, install the bolts holding the shift lever support to the crossmember.
  10.  

Lubricate the tailshaft bushing before the driveshafts are installed.

  1. Align the marks made earlier and install the driveshaft assembly. If removed, install the exhaust pipe to the manifold.
  2.  
  3. Connect the speedometer cable and, on floor shift cars, connect the backup light.
  4.  
  5. Check the transmission fluid level and add, as necessary.
  6.  
  7. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.

1970 and Later Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On floor shift models, remove the shift knob and console trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the front of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the speedometer cable and the TCS switch wiring.
  8.  
  9. Matchmark and remove the driveshaft assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts securing the transmission mounts to the crossmember and also the bolts securing the crossmember to the frame. Remove the crossmember from the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the shift levers from the side of the transmission.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the back drive rod from the bellcrank.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts from the shift control assembly and carefully lower the assembly until the shift lever clears the rubber shift boot. Remove the assembly from the car.
  18.  
  19. Remove the transmission-to-bellhousing bolts and carefully lower the transmission from the car.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Lift the transmission into position and carefully insert the mainshaft into the bellhousing.
  2.  
  3. Install and torque the transmission-to-clutch housing bolts and lockwashers.
  4.  
  5. Install the shift lever.
  6.  
  7. Install the shift levers to the transmission side cover.
  8.  
  9. Connect the back drive rod to the bellcrank.
  10.  
  11. Raise the engine high enough to position the crossmember. Install and tighten the crossmember-to-frame bolts and transmission mount to crossmember bolts.
  12.  
  13. Align the marks made earlier and install the driveshaft assembly.
  14.  
  15. Connect the speedometer cable and TCS wiring.
  16.  
  17. Fill the transmission with the specified lubricant. If applicable, install the console trim plate and shift knob. Adjust the linkage.
