Axle Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands.
  2.  


CAUTION
Make sure the rear axle assembly is supported safely.

  1. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the driveshaft and pinion flange, then disconnect the drive shaft and remove or support out of the way.
  4.  
  5. Remove the brake line junction block bolt at the axle housing. If necessary disconnect the brake lines at the junction block and plug the openings.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the upper control arms from the axle housing.
  8.  
  9. Lower the rear axle assembly sufficiently and remove the springs.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear wheels and drums.
  12.  
  13. With the aid of an assistant, carefully continue lowering the rear axle assembly and remove it from the vehicle.
  14.  

To install:
  1. With the aid of an assistant, carefully raise the axle assembly using a suitable jack or hoist and install the springs.
  2.  
  3. Reconnect the upper and lower control arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the caps and connect the brake lines and or the junction block.
  6.  
  7. Align and install the driveshaft assembly.
  8.  
  9. Connect the shock absorbers to the axle carrier.
  10.  
  11. Install the brake drums and wheels.
  12.  
  13. If the lines were disconnected, properly bleed the hydraulic brake system.
  14.  
  15. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
