Park/Neutral And Back-Up Lamp Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the shift linkage.
  4.  
  5. Detach the switch electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the mounting bolts and remove the switch from the vehicle.
  8.

To install
  1. If reinstalling the OLD SWITCH, proceed as follows:
    1. Place the shift shaft in NEUTRAL .
    2.  
    3. Align the flats of the shift shaft with the switch.
    4.  
    5. Assemble the mounting bolts to the case loosely.
    6.  
    7. Insert a 3 / 32 in. (2.4mm) drill bit in the service adjustment hole and rotate the switch until the pin drops to a depth of 9 / 64 in. (3.6mm).
    8.  
    9. Tighten the bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Remove the gauge pin.
    12.

CAUTION
After switch adjustment, verify that the engine will only start in PARK or NEUTRAL . If engine will start in any other position readjust switch.

  1. If installing a NEW SWITCH, proceed as follows:
    1. Place the shift shaft in NEUTRAL .
    2.  
    3. Align the flats of the shift shaft with the switch.
    4.  
    5. Tighten the mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).

If the bolt holes do not align with the mounting boss on the transaxle, verify the shift shaft is in NEUTRAL position, do not rotate the switch. The switch is pinned in the NEUTRAL position.

  1. If the switch has been rotated and the pin broken, the switch an be adjusted by using the Old Switch replacement procedure.
  2.  


CAUTION
After switch installation, verify that the engine will only start in PARK or NEUTRAL. If engine will start in any other position readjust the switch using the replacement of the Old Switch procedure.

ADJUSTMENT



See Figure 1

  1. Place the transaxle control shifter assembly in the NEUTRAL notch in the detent plate.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the switch attaching screws.
  4.  
  5. Rotate the switch on the shifter assembly to align the service adjustment hole with the carrier tang hole.
  6.  
  7. Insert a 3 / 32 in. (2.4mm) drill bit in the service adjustment hole and rotate the switch until the pin drops to a depth of 9 / 64 in. (3.6mm).
  8.  
  9. Tighten the attaching screws to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the gauge pin.
