Oil pump drive gear backlash must be checked when any of the following components are replaced: oil pump assembly, oil pump drive gear, crankshaft and cylinder block.

To install:
  1. Check and adjust oil pump drive gear backlash as follows:
    1. With oil pump assembly off engine, remove 3 attaching bolts and separate the driven gear cover and screen assembly from the oil pump.
    2.
    3. Install the oil pump on the block using the original shims. Tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) for6990 vehicles and 40 ft. lbs. (1 Nm) for6991-94 vehicles.
    4.
    5. Install the dial indicator assembly to measure backlash between oil pump to drive gear.
    6.
    7. Record oil pump drive to driven gear backlash correct backlash clearance is 0.0091-0.0201 in. (0.23-0.51mm). When taking measurement crankshaft cannot move.
    8.
    9. Remove oil pump from block reinstall driven gear cover and screen assembly to pump and tighten to606 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    10.
    11. Reinstall the pump assembly on block. Tighten oil pump-to-block bolts 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    12.

  2.
  3. Install the oil pump assembly, including shims if removed.
  4.
  5. Tighten oil pump to block bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) for6990 vehicles and 40 ft. lbs. (1 Nm) for6991-94 vehicles.
  6.
  7. Install the oil pan and attaching bolts.
  8.
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Fill the crankcase with the proper type and amount of engine oil. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for leaks.
  12.
  13. Turn the engine off and allow to stand. Check oil level, add as necessary.
