REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988-90 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable flat-bladed tool, carefully pry off the grille.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws retaining the speaker to the instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. Detach the speaker electrical connection, then remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Reposition the speaker and attach the electrical connection.
  2.  
  3. Install the screws retaining the speaker to the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Press the speaker grille into place.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1991-96 Vehicles

See Figure 1

The shroud side trim panels incorporate the front speakers.

  1. Disable the SIR system, as outlined earlier in this section.
  2.  
  3. If not already done, disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the shroud side trim panel as follows:
    1. Remove the sound insulator.
    2.  
    3. Remove the carpet retainer.
    4.  
    5. Remove the upper screw from the hood release bracket.
    6.  
    7. Loosen the instrument panel sound insulator.
    8.  
    9. Remove the stud to bracket on the dash panel.
    10.  
    11. Slide the panel toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage the retainer from the floor bracket (left side), or stud (right side).
    12.  
    13. Disconnect the speaker wire.
    14.

  7. Remove the speaker-to-trim panel bolts, then remove the speaker from the vehicle.

To install:
  1. Position the speaker to the trim panel, then tighten the bolts to 16 inch lbs. (1.8 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the speaker wire.
  4.  
  5. Install the shroud side trim panel as follows:
    1. Insert the retainer on the panel into the floor support bracket (left side), or stud (right side).
    2.  
    3. Position the panel to hinge pillar over the hood release bracket and align the bolt hole. Align the upper hole in the panel with the dash mat support bracket (left side). On the right side, align the upper hole with the bracket and dash mat support bracket.
    4.  
    5. Apply sufficient pressure to allow the installation of the stud and tighten the stud to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the carpet retainer.
    8.  
    9. Install the sound insulator.
    10.

  7. Enable the SIR system, then connect the negative battery cable.
