Fuel Pressure Release

Print

CAUTION
To reduce the risk of fire or personal injury, it is necessary to relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel system.

2.0L and 2.2L engines

1988-91 VEHICLES

The TBI Model 700 used on these models uses a constant bleed feature to relieve fuel pressure. Therefore, no special procedures are required for relieving fuel pressure.

CAUTION
A small amount of fuel may be released after the fuel line is disconnected. To reduce the chance of personal injury, cover the fuel line with cloth to collect the fuel and then place the cloth in an approved container.

CAUTION
Never smoke when working around gasoline! Avoid all sources of sparks or ignition. Gasoline vapors are EXTREMELY volatile!

1992 VEHICLES
  1. Loosen the full filler cap to relieve the tank vapor pressure. Leave the cap loose at this time.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. Start the engine and run until the fuel supply remaining in the fuel pipes is consumed. Engage the starter for 3 seconds to assure relief of any remaining pressure.
  10.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  12.
  13. Connect the fuel pump electrical connector.
  14.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16.
  17. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
  18.
  19. Disconnect the negative battery cable terminal to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine.

2.3L engine
1990 VEHICLES
  1. Connect a J-34730-1 fuel gage or equivalent to the fuel pressure valve. Wrap a shop towel around the fitting while connecting the gage to avoid spillage.
  2.
  3. Install a bleed hose into an approved container and open the valve to bleed the system pressure.
  4.
