Ignition Switch and Dimmer Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with a column shift, place the transaxle selector in P .
  4.  
  5. Place the lock cylinder in the ACC position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left side sound insulator panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column-to-support bolts. Gently lower the steering column onto the driver's seat.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the dimmer and ignition switch connectors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the dimmer switch nut, bolt and disconnect the dimmer switch from the actuator rod.
  14.  
  15. Remove the switch.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Make sure the ignition lock cylinder is in the ACC position.
  2.  
  3. Insert the dimmer switch actuator rod into the hole in the dimmer switch.
  4.  
  5. Position the dimmer switch in place on the stud and install the retainer nut and screw. Do not tighten.
  6.  
  7. Position the dimmer switch so a click is heard when the turn signal lever is pulled. Tighten the nut and screw to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Raise the steering column into place and connect the dimmer switch and turn signal switch connectors.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering column-to-support screws and secure the steering column in place.
  12.  
  13. Install the left side lower trim panel.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16.  

1989-90 Vehicles

See Figure 1

The manufacturer recommends that the steering column be removed from vehicle before performing this procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place the ignition switch in the OFF-LOCK position.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column and place in a suitable holding fixture.
  6.  
  7. Remove the dimmer switch nut, bolt and disconnect the dimmer switch from the actuator rod.
  8.  
  9. Remove the switch.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Make sure the ignition lock cylinder is in the OFF-LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Insert the dimmer switch actuator rod into the hole in the dimmer switch.
  4.  

Should the actuator rod become disengaged from the rod cap, upon installation the tab on the rod must engage the wide slot in the rod cap and snap into place.

  1. Position the dimmer switch in place on the stud and install the retainer nut and screw. Do not tighten at this time.
  2.  

  1. Adjust the dimmer switch by inserting a 1 / 32 in. (0.8mm) drill bit or a 2.34mm diameter gauge pin into the adjustment hole in the dimmer switch. Push the switch against the actuator rod to remove all the lash.
  2.  
  3. Tighten the nut and screw to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Remove the adjustment tool from the dimmer switch.
  6.  
  7. Install the steering column in the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

1991-96 Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system.
  4.  
  5. Place the ignition switch in the OFF-LOCK position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the left side sound insulator panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts from the lower steering column support.
  10.  
  11. Remove the flange and coupling pinch bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper and lower bolts from the upper steering column support.
  14.  
  15. Detach the dimmer and ignition switch electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Carefully lower the steering column.
  18.  
  19. Remove the hexagonal nut and bolt/screw attaching the dimmer switch.
  20.  
  21. Disengage the dimmer switch actuator from the switch and remove the switch.

To install:
  1. Ensure the ignition switch is in the OFF-LOCK position.
  2.  
  3. Engage the dimmer switch actuator rod in the dimmer switch and position the dimmer switch on the mounting stud.
  4.  
  5. Install the nut and bolt/screw. Do not tighten.
  6.  
  7. Adjust the dimmer switch by inserting a 1 / 32 in. (0.8mm) drill bit or a 2.34mm diameter gauge pin into the adjustment hole in the dimmer switch. Push the switch against the actuator rod to remove all the lash.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the nut and screw to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Remove the adjustment tool from the dimmer switch.
  12.  
  13. Support the steering column and install the column into the flange and coupling assembly.
  14.  
  15. Attach the dimmer and ignition switch electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Raise the column into position and loosely install the lower bolts to the upper steering column support bracket.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower steering column support bracket bolts. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the upper bolts to the upper steering column support bracket. Tighten the upper and lower bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the flange and coupling assembly pinch bolt. Tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the right side sound insulator panel.
  26.  
  27. Enable the SIR system.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30.
