REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



See Figures 1 and 2

Front Cable
  1. Remove the driver's seat cushion and frame assembly.
  2.  
  3. Properly disable the parking brake automatic adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the front cable from the front cable connector.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front cable from the front cable return spring.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the left rear cable from the parking brake front cable assembly connector.

  1. Remove the front cable attaching clip bolt and clip.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle and remove the front cable from the automatic adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front cable attaching nut and washer.
  6.  
  7. Remove the front cable from the vehicle.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the front cable to the vehicle, then attach the front cable washer and nut. Tighten the nut 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the front cable to the automatic adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Install the front cable clip and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the parking brake left rear cable to the front cable assembly connector.

  1. Connect the parking brake front cable to the front cable return spring and then to the parking brake cable connector.
  2.  
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Properly enable the automatic brake adjuster.
  6.  
  7. Install the driver's seat cushion and frame assembly.
  8.  

Intermediate Cable
  1. Disable the parking brake automatic adjuster.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it safely.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the parking brake intermediate cable from the cable connectors and front cable guide.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  8.  

Rear Cable
LEFT
  1. Disable the automatic parking brake adjuster.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely, then remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front cable from the front cable return spring.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the left rear cable from the front cable assembly connector.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the cable from the left rear cable bracket.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the left rear cable from the caliper mounting bracket and lever.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Install the left rear cable to the caliper lever and mounting bracket. Be sure the boot on the end of the cable is attached to the conduit end fitting.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to properly enable the parking brake automatic adjuster.
  6.  

RIGHT
  1. Disable the parking brake automatic adjuster.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support it safely, then remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the right rear cable from the intermediate cable.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the right rear cable from the right rear cable bracket.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the right rear cable from the caliper mounting bracket and lever.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the right rear cable to the caliper lever and mounting bracket. Be sure the boot on the end of the cable is attached to the conduit end fitting.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to properly enable the parking brake automatic adjuster.
  6.  

ADJUSTMENT



1984-87 Vehicles

See Figure 3

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies, then install 2 lug nuts on each wheel to retain the rotors.
  4.  
  5. Use a large C-clamp or pair of pliers to compress the caliper piston into its bore.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the parking brake cable so there is not tension on the parking brake shoes.
  8.  
  9. Rotate the disc so that the hole in the disc/drum face will align with the star adjuster.
  10.  
  11. To perform the adjustment, insert a suitable flat-bladed tool through the hole in the disc face and perform the following:
    1. For the drivers side, move the handle of the tool towards the ceiling to adjust the shoes out and towards the floor to adjust the shoes in.
    2.  
    3. For the passengers side, move the handle of the tool toward the floor to adjust the shoes out and towards the ceiling to adjust them in.
    4.

  13. Adjust one side at a time until there is no rotation of the disc/drum. Then, back the star adjuster off about 5-7 notches. Then, go back to the opposite side and perform the same procedure.
  14.  
  15. Remove the lug nuts, then install the wheel and tire assemblies.
  16.  
  17. Apply the parking brake lever 2 notches.
  18.  
  19. Adjust the cable at the equalizer so that the wheel has a drag.

  1. Release the parking brake lever and check the wheel for free rotation.
  2.  
  3. If the adjustment is correct, there will be no drag on the wheel.
  4.  

1988-96 Vehicles

See Figure 4

The parking brake lever/cable adjustment is automatic. The adjuster must be disabled to create the necessary cable slack for certain service procedures. Following these procedures, make sure the adjuster is properly enabled to assure correct parking brake operation.

  1. To disable the automatic parking brake adjuster, proceed as follows:
    1. Remove the drivers seat cushion.
    2.  
    3. Remove the parking brake lever cover and screws.
    4.  
    5. Using a suitable offset tool, disengage and hold the drive pawl from the drive sector.
    6.  
    7. Insert a nail or drift through the hole in the anchor plate to retain the drive pawl in the disengaged position.
    8.  
    9. Move the parking brake lever until it aligns with the lock pawl.
    10.  
    11. Depress the button on the lever and move the lever to the down position.
    12.  
    13. Verify the anchor plate is against the stud on the parking brake lever, if not as specified, repeat the procedure.

  1. To enable the automatic parking brake adjuster, proceed as follows:
    1. Remove the nail or drift pin from the anchor plate.
    2.  
    3. Apply and release the parking brake 3 times.
    4.  
    5. Pull up on the parking brake lever. Proper adjustment will result in the lever moving 3-5 ratchet clicks with a force of 61 lbs. (270 N).
    6.  
    7. Release the parking brake, there should be no rear brake drag and no gap between the caliper housings and caliper parking brake levers. It may be necessary to remove the tire and wheel assemblies to see the caliper housings and levers.
    8.  
    9. If removed, install the wheel and tire assembly.
    10.  
    11. Install the parking brake lever cover and screws.
    12.  
    13. Install the driver's seat cushion.
