Instrument Panel and Pad

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1970-77 Cutlass
  1. Remove the right hand and left hand lower A/C outlets.
  2.  
  3. Remove the glove box door and glove box.
  4.  
  5. If equipped with an automatic transmission column shift - remove the lower trim panel (below steering column) then disconnect the shift indicator clip on the shift bowl.
  6.  
  7. Remove the radio if equipped.
  8.  
  9. Remove the trim pad and instrument cluster.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the following electrical connectors.
    1. Headlamp switch.
    2.  
    3. Washer-wiper switch.
    4.  
    5. Accessory switches.
    6.  
    7. Lighter.
    8.  
    9. Radio.
    10.  
    11. Map light.
    12.  
    13. A/C or heater control.
    14.  
    15. Defogger.
    16.  
    17. Trunk release switch.
    18.  
    19. Glove box lamp.
    20.  

  12.  
  13. Disconnect the following sockets.
    1. Ash tray.
    2.  
    3. Courtesy.
    4.  
    5. Flood lighting.
    6.  
    7. Headlamp switch.
    8.

  15. Remove the wiring harness attaching screws.
  16.  
  17. Remove the A/C or heater control attaching screws.
  18.  
  19. Remove the pad attaching nuts and remove the cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the toe-pan clamp bolts and lower the steering column.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten the nuts attaching the control panel to the dash and remove the pad and control panel.
  24.  
  25. Remove the screws to separate the control panel from the pad assembly.
  26.  

To install:
  1. Fasten the screws which attach the the pad assembly to the control panel.
  2.  
  3. Raise the steering column and fasten the toe-pan clamp bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install the cover and fasten the pad attaching bolts.
  6.  
  7. Install the radio and fasten the A/C or heater control attaching screws.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the wiring harness screws.
  10.  
  11. Connect the bulb sockets and electrical connections.
  12.  
  13. Install the instrument cluster and trim pad.
  14.  
  15. Install the glove box and glove box door.
  16.  
  17. Install the lower A/C outlets.
  18.  

1978-87 Cutlass
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right and left sound insulators.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering column trim plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the instrument panel pad attaching screws. On some models it may be necessary to remove the speaker and defogger grilles to access some screws. Remove the pad.
  8.  
  9. Split the bulkhead connector by removing the bolt and screws on the inside of the fuse block and pull the harness free.
  10.  
  11. Lower the steering column and disconnect all electrical connections that are connected to the instrument panel harness.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the parking brake release cable.
  14.  
  15. Remove the A/C or heater control head.
  16.  
  17. If equipped, disconnect:
    1. Wire at switch for the rear compartment lid release.
    2.  
    3. Antenna lead.
    4.  
    5. Power antenna wire connector.
    6.  
    7. Connector for rear window defogger.
    8.

  19. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transducer in the engine compartment, or the transmission for slack.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower A/C duct by removing the screws and rotate the duct out.
  22.  
  23. Remove the instrument panel by removing:
    1. Nuts from the top left and right of the panel.
    2.  
    3. Screws from the center support.
    4.  
    5. Bolts from the steering column support bracket.
    6.  
    7. The screws from the upper tie bar.
    8.  
    9. Screws from the lower reinforcement.
    10.  
    11. Bolts from the steering column opening, if present.
    12.  
    13. Speedometer cable from the speedometer.
    14.  
    15. Instrument panel from it's support brackets.

To install:
  1. Install the instrument panel by installing.
    1. Instrument panel to its support.
    2.  
    3. Speedometer cable to the speedometer.
    4.  
    5. Bolts to the steering column opening, if present.
    6.  
    7. Screws from the lower reinforcement.
    8.  
    9. Bolts from the steering column support bracket.
    10.  
    11. Nuts from the top left and right of the panel.
    12.

  3. Install the lower A/C duct and fasten the screws
  4.  
  5. Connect the speedometer cable at the transducer in the engine compartment, or the transmission.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, connect:
    1. Wire at switch for the rear compartment lid release.
    2.  
    3. Antenna lead.
    4.  
    5. Power antenna wire connector.
    6.  
    7. Connector for rear window defogger.
    8.

  9. Install the A/C or heater control head.
  10.  
  11. Connect the parking brake release cable.
  12.  
  13. Engage all electrical connections that are connected to the instrument panel harness. Raise the steering column
  14.  
  15. Install the bulkhead connector by fastening the bolt and screws on the inside of the fuse block and pull the harness free.
  16.  
  17. Install the instrument panel pad
  18.  
  19. Install the steering column trim plate and the right and left sound insulators.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
