REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3-Speed and 4-Speed Transmission
  1. Raise the vehicle and support it safely with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the driveshaft.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the shift linkage. On floor shift models, remove the shift lever from the shifter assembly. The shift lever is retained by a pin and spring clip arrangements. See the illustration for removal.
  6.  
  7. If equipped with Transmission Controlled Spark (TCS), disconnect the TCS switch wire.
  8.  
  9. Support the engine with a jack. Remove the bolts which attach the crossmember to the transmission.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the parking brake cable, and unbolt the transmission crossmember from the frame. On dual exhaust models, if may be necessary to disconnect the left hand exhaust pipe at exhaust manifold to provide clearance.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transmission.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two top transmission-to-bellhousing bolts and install guide studs in their place. The guide studs may be fabricated from two old transmission bolts by simply cutting the heads off the bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the two lower transmission attaching bolts.
  18.  
  19. Carefully slide the transmission rearward and remove it from the car.
  20.  

To install:
  1. To install the transmission, bring it into position with the bellhousing and carefully guide it into the housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the transmission. You may have to turn the input shaft one way or the other to get the splines to mate with the grooves in the clutch hub.
  4.  
  5. Fasten the transmission attaching bolts and torque to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Raise the engine with the jack (as necessary) and install the crossmember, torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the exhaust pipe (if it was removed) and torque to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the driveshaft. Connect the speedometer cable.
  12.  
  13. Connect the TCS switch wire (if equipped). Install the shift lever or shift linkage.
  14.  
  15. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
  16.  

5-Speed Transmission
  1. Remove the shift control knob, the shift boot retainer, shift boot, and insulator.
  2.  
  3. Pull back the edge of the carpeting and remove the bolts that attach the shifter assembly, then remove the assembly.
  4.  
  5. Raise the vehicle and support it safely with jackstands.
  6.  
  7. Remove the driveshaft.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the speedometer cable.
  10.  
  11. Remove the catalytic converter support bracket.
  12.  
  13. Support the engine with a jack and remove the bolts which attach the crossmember to the transmission. Unbolt the crossmember from the frame and remove it from the car.
  14.  
  15. Remove the two upper bolts which attach the transmission to the bellhousing. Install guide pins in their place. These may be made from a pair of old transmission bolts with the heads cut off. Guide pins are necessary to prevent distortion of the clutch plate when the two lower bolts are removed. If no guide pins are available, support the transmission in some way before removing the two lower bolts.

  17. Remove the two lower bolts and slide the transmission out of the bellhousing.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Bring the transmission into position with the bellhousing and carefully guide it into the housing. It will probably be necessary to turn the input shaft one way or the other to get the splines to mate with the grooves in the clutch hub.
  2.  
  3. Fasten the transmission attaching bolts
  4.  
  5. Reinstall the crossmember.
  6.  
  7. Install the driveshaft and the speedometer cable.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the catalytic converter support bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the shifter.
  12.  
  13. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the vehicle.
  14.
