GM Cutlass RWD 1970-1987 Repair Guide

Leaf Springs

  1. Raise the rear axle housing and safely support the rear end of the vehicle with jackstands placed under the rear frame rails (ahead of the forward rear spring shackles). Do not lower the jack yet.

If removing the right hand spring, loosen the tailpipe and resonator assembly.

  1. Remove the lower shock absorber nut and move the shock out of the bracket. Compress the shock out of the way.
  3. Lower the jack until the springs are completely relaxed. The jack must remain underneath the axle housing for support until the spring is completely removed.

Do not stretch the brake hose.

  1. Remove the bolts from the rear spring shackles.
  3. Remove the four U-bolt attaching nuts. Remove the spacers, which will be reused during installation.
  5. Remove the NUT ONLY from the front shackle bolt, and while holding the spring up, remove the bolt from the shackle. Remove the spring from the vehicle.

To install:

Before installation, make sure that any parts, including bolts and nuts, that are replaced are replaced with parts of equal strength and quality. Rated nuts and bolts must be replaced with parts of equal rating.

  1. Install the sleeves and bushing halves in the rear shackle (if removed) and loosely install the shackle bolt and nut.

Do not tighten the shackle nuts until the weight of the vehicle is on the springs.

  1. Place the upper spring cushion pad on the spring so the cushion is indexed on the spring center locating bolt head.
  3. Lower the axle housing onto the spring, keeping the jack underneath the housing.
  5. Place the lower spring cushion pad on the spring and the shock absorber anchor plate with the dimple on the cushion indexed in the hole in the plate.
  7. Position the spring and shock absorber anchor plate to the spring, with the nut of the spring center locating bolt indexed in the dimple of the lower spring cushion pad.
  9. Install the lower spring plate, then loosely install the U-bolt nuts.
  11. Raise the jack slightly, and install the shim spacers.
  13. Lower the axle housing onto the spring, and torque the U-bolt nuts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm). Install the shock absorber lower end stud into the spring plate, and tighten the shock lower end stud nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Make sure the shock stud does not rotate while the nut is tightened.
  15. Raise the vehicle so the weight of the vehicle is on the springs. Torque the spring front bolt nut to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm), and the rear shackle nut to 105 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  17. Remove the jack studs and lower the vehicle.
