REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figures 1 and 2

Models Without Tilt and Telescopic Column

The steering wheel must always be supported. Use extreme care not to bend the steering column.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2.
  3. Remove the steering wheel.
  4.
  5. Remove the three cover screws and the cover. All 1976 and later steering columns have a redesigned lock plate which is removed by inserting a screwdriver in the cover slot and prying out. This is done in at least two of the slots to avoid breaking the plate.
  6.
  7. Depress the lock plate and remove the snapring. Remove the lock plate.
  8.
  9. Remove the spring and horn contact signal cancelling cam. Remove the thrust washer.
  10.
  11. Place the turn signal lever in the right turn position, remove the attaching screw and remove the turn signal lever. On models with the dimmer switch mounted on the column, remove the actuator arm screw and the actuator arm. Pull the turn signal lever straight out to remove. Depress the hazard warning knob, and remove the knob. Some models have a screw in the end of the knob which must be removed.
  12.
  13. Remove the three turn signal switch mounting screws.
  14.
  15. Remove the instrument panel lower trim panel and disconnect the turn signal connector from the harness.
  16.
  17. Remove the four bracket attaching screws and remove the bracket.
  18.
  19. On 1977 and later models with automatic transmissions, loosen the shift indicator needle attaching screw and remove the needle.
  20.
  21. On 1977 and later models, remove the two steering column supporting bolts while supporting the column. Do not allow the column to drop suddenly.
  22.
  23. Remove the bracket and wiring from the column. Loosely reinstall the column supporting bolts, if removed.
  24.
  25. Pull the switch straight up with the wire protector and wire harness.
