Speedometer Cable

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer. Push down on the spring tab to release.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the other end of the speedometer cable (at rear side of transmission or the cruise control transducer) and remove the cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove any retaining clips that attach the cable to the body and carefully pull the cable out of the vehicle. If the cable will not pull out easily, it is still clipped to the vehicle at some point, or it is stuck on other wires or components.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Before installing, grease both ends of the cable with an approved speedometer cable lubricant.
  2.  

A new type speedometer cable is available as a replacement part for 1981 models only. The new cable is identified by the longer ferrule at the speedometer end. The old style (short ferrule) cable may be used on either the old or new style speedometer head.

  1. Install any retaining clips that attach the cable to the body. If the cable will not install easily, it is may be stuck on other wires or components.
  2.  
  3. Install the correct end of the speedometer cable at rear side of transmission or the cruise control transducer.
  4.  
  5. Connect the speedometer cable to the back of the speedometer. Push down on the spring tab to install.
  6.  
  7. Install the instrument cluster. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
