IGNITION COIL PACK (TYPE 1)

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the pack.
  4.  
  5. Remove the retaining screws securing the coil to the ignition module.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coil assembly. Inspect the module terminals.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Fit the coil pack assembly to the ignition module.
  2.  
  3. Install the retaining screws and torque to 40 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 retaining screws securing the coil to the ignition module.
  6.  
  7. Remove the coil assembly. Inspect the module terminals.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Fit the coil assembly to the ignition module.
  2.  
  3. Install the retaining screws and torque to 40 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the spark plug wires.
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

C 3 I MODULE



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the 14-way connector at the ignition module.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the spark plug wires at the coil assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the nuts and washers that retains the module to the bracket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coil(s)-to-module retaining bolts.
  10.  
  11. Note the lead colors or mark for reassembly.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the connectors between the coil(s) and ignition module.
  14.  
  15. Remove the ignition module.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Fit the coil(s) and connectors to the ignition module and install the retaining bolts. Tighten and torque the retaining bolts to 40 inch lbs. (4-5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Fit the module assembly to the bracket and install the nuts and washers.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the 14-way connector to the module.
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

DUAL CRANK SENSOR

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the engine block, then separate the sensor from the pedestal.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor to the pedestal.
  2.  
  3. Using tool J-37089 or equivalent, position the sensor with the pedestal attached, on the crankshaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the pedestal-to-block retaining bolts. Tighten and torque to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Torque the pedestal pinch bolt 30-35 inch lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Remove tool J-37089 or equivalent.
  10.  
  11. Place tool J-37089 or equivalent, on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly.
  12.  

A clearance of 0.025 inch is required on either side of the interrupter ring. Be certain to obtain the correct clearance. Failure to do so will damage the sensor. A misadjusted sensor of bent interrupter ring could cause rubbing of the sensor, resulting in potential driveability problems, such as rough idle, poor performance, or a no start condition.

  1. Install the balancer on the crankshaft. Install the balancer retaining bolt. Tighten and torque the retaining bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the inner fender shield.
  4.  
  5. Install the right front wheel assembly. Tighten and torque the wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Install the belt(s).
  10.  
  11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

ESC KNOCK SENSOR



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the harness connector from the knock sensor, located near cylinder #2 on the rear of the engine.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sensor from the engine block.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Clean the threads on the engine block, where the sensor was installed. Install the sensor. Tighten to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Reconnect the harness connector to the knock sensor.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) AND/OR MEM-CAL



  1. Turn the ignition switch off .
  2.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right side hush panel.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the harness connectors from the control unit.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control unit-to-bracket retaining screws and remove the control unit.
  8.  
  9. If replacement of the Mem-Cal is required, remove the access cover retaining screws and cover from the control unit. Note the position of the Mem-Cal for proper installation in the new ecm. A Mem-Cal that is installed backwards will most likely permanently damage the ecm. Using 2 fingers, carefully push both retaining clips back away from the Mem-Cal. At the same time, grasp it at both ends and lift it up out of the socket. Do not remove the cover of the Mem-Cal.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Fit the replacement Mem-Cal into the socket.
  2.  

The small notches in the Mem-Cal must be aligned with the small notches in the socket. Press only on the ends of the Mem-Cal until the retaining clips snap into the ends of the Mem-Cal. Do not press on the middle of the Mem-Cal, only the ends.

  1. Install the access cover and retaining screws.
  2.  
  3. Position the control unit in the vehicle and install the control unit-to-bracket retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Reconnect the control unit harness connectors.
  6.  
  7. Install the hush panel.
  8.  
  9. Check that the ignition switch is off . Then reconnect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Functional Check
  1. Turn the ignition on .
  2.  

  1. Enter diagnostics.
  2.  
    1. Allow Code 12 to flash 4 times to verify no other codes are present. This indicates the Mem-Cal is installed properly and the control unit is functioning.
    2.  
    3. If trouble Codes 42, 43 or 51 occur, or if the Service Engine Soon light is on constantly with no codes, the MemCal is not fully seated or is defective.
    4.  
    5. If it is not fully seated, press firmly on the ends of the Mem-Cal.
    6.
