CAUTION
Never operate the starter motor motor than 30 seconds at a time without pausing to allow it to cool for at least two minutes. Overheating, caused by excessive cranking, will seriously damage the starter motor.

The sd-250 is rated at 45-75 amps during a 10 volt no-load test with the drive pinion spinning at 8,600-12,900 rpm. The pg-250 is rated at 65-90 amps during a 10 volt no-load test with the drive pinion spinning at 2,700-3,200 rpm.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring from the starter.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel shields.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter retaining bolts and remove the starter from the engine.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Position the starter against the engine and install the bolts. Torque to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the starter wiring.
  4.  
  5. Install the flywheel shields.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Check the starter for proper operation.
  10.

The following procedure is for the model sd-250. On the pg-250, the solenoid and drive end housing must be serviced together, following the numbered steps in Figure 6.

  1. Remove the starter from the vehicle. If desired, remove the solenoid cover to inspect the contact disc.
  2.  
  3. Remove the screw at the field strap.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts from the solenoid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the solenoid by rotating 90 degrees.
  8.  
  9. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
