REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the engine and secure it to a workstand.
  2.
  3. Remove the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolts and the flywheel.
  4.
  5. Remove the timing chain cover-to-engine bolts and the cover.
  6.
  7. Remove the camshaft sprocket-to-camshaft gear bolts, the sprocket, the timing chain and the gear.
  8.
  9. To remove the balance shaft, perform the following procedures:
  10.
    1. Remove the balance shaft gear-to-shaft bolt and the gear.
    2.
    3. Remove the balance shaft retainer-to-engine bolts and the retainer.
    4.
    5. Using the slide hammer tool, pull the balance shaft from the front of the engine.
    6.

To install:

  1. If replacing the rear balance shaft bearing, perform the following procedures:
  2.
    1. Drive the rear plug from the engine.
    2.
    3. Using the camshaft remover/installer tool, press the rear bearing from the rear of the engine.
    4.
    5. Dip the new bearing in clean engine oil.
    6.
    7. Using the balance shaft rear bearing installer tool, press the new rear bearing into the rear of the engine.
    8.
    9. Install the rear cup plug.
    10.

  3. Using the balance shaft installer tool, screw it into the balance shaft and install the shaft into the engine; remove the installer tool.
  4.
  5. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces. Inspect the parts for wear and/or damage; replace the parts, if necessary.
  6.
  7. Install the balance shaft retainer. Torque the balance shaft retainer-to-engine bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  8.
  9. Align the balance shaft gear with the camshaft gear timing marks. Install the balance shaft gear onto the balance shaft. Torque the balance gear-to-balance shaft bolt to 15 ft. lbs (17 Nm), then using a torque angle meter tool, rotate another 35 degrees.
  10.
  11. Align the marks on the balance shaft gear and the camshaft gear by turning the balance shaft.
  12.
  13. Turn the crankshaft so the No. 1 piston is at tdc.
  14.
  15. Install the timing chain and sprocket.
  16.
  17. Replace the balance shaft front bearing retainer and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 26 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  18.
  19. Install the front timing cover and the lifter guide retainer.
  20.
  21. Install the intake manifold and flywheel assembly.
  22.
  23. Install the engine assembly and connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
