REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Camshaft bearing removal should be done by a qualified machine shop because the tools needed are expensive and would not be economical to purchase for a one time usage.

Camshaft bearings can be replaced with engine completely or partially disassembled. To replace bearings without complete disassembly remove the camshaft and crankshaft leaving cylinder heads attached and pistons in place. Before removing crankshaft, install two inch pieces of rubber hose to the threads of connecting rod bolts to prevent damage to crankshaft. Fasten connecting rods against sides of engine so they will not be in the way while replacing camshaft bearings.

Do not use cam bearings over once they have been removed. Only replace those bearings that have been removed.

Follow your tool manufacturer's instructions if they differ from those given below.

  1. Remove the timing chain front cover and camshaft rear cover as outlined in the `Timing Chain Cover and Camshaft' removal procedures.
  2.  
  3. Using a camshaft bearing Tool J-33049 or its equivalent, with the nut and thrust washer installed to the end of the threads, index the pilot in the camshaft front bearing and install the puller screw through the pilot.
  4.  
  5. Install the remover and installer tool with the shoulder toward the bearing, making sure a sufficient number of threads are engaged.
  6.  
  7. Using two wrenches, hold the puller screw while turning the nut. When the bearing has been pulled from the bore, remove the remover and installer tool and bearing from the puller screw.
  8.  
  9. Remove the remaining bearings (except front and rear) in the same manner. It will be necessary to index the pilot in the camshaft rear bearing to remove the rear intermediate bearing.
  10.  
  11. Assemble the remover and installer tool on the driver handle and remove the camshaft front and rear bearings by driving towards the center of the cylinder block. The camshaft front and rear bearings should be installed first. These bearings will act as guides for the pilot, and center the remaining bearings being pulled into place.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Assemble the remover and installer tool on the driver handle and install the camshaft front and rear bearings by driving them towards the center of the cylinder block. Make sure the oil holes in the bearing line up with the holes in the block.
  2.  
  3. Using Tool Set J-6098, or its equivalent with the nut and thrust washer installed to end of the threads, index the pilot into the camshaft front bearing and install the puller screw through the pilot.
  4.  
  5. Index the camshaft bearing into the bore (with oil hole aligned as outlined below), then install the remover and installer tool on the puller screw with the shoulder toward the bearing.
  6.  
  7. Using two wrenches, hold the puller screw while turning the nut. After the bearing has been pulled into the bore, remove the remover and installer tool from the puller screw and check the alignment of the oil holes in the camshaft bearings.
  8.  
  9. Install the remaining bearings in the same manner. It will be necessary to index the pilot in the camshaft rear bearing to install the rear intermediate bearing.
  10.  
  11. Clean the rear cover mating surfaces and apply a 1 / 8 inch bead of rtv to the cover. Install the rear cover using the appropriate size core plug installed.
  12.  
  13. Install the camshaft as outlined in the `Camshaft' installation procedures. Install the timing gear cover, all accessories and install the engine into the vehicle.
