REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



If the vehicle was involved in a front or rear end collision and the energy absorbers did not return to their original positions, replace absorbers in pairs. Use precautions when working around these devices; they contain pressurized gas and can be dangerous.

Front Bumper

  1. Remove wheel opening moulding-to-facia screws on each side.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Disconnect lamp wiring as required.
  4.  
  5. Remove the facia-to-fender bolts on each side.
  6.  
  7. Remove the air deflector-to-radiator support screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the push-in retainers attaching the splash shield to the impact bar on each side.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bumper-to-energy absorber nuts.
  12.  
  13. Note number and location of adjusting shims and remove.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bumper.
  16.  
  17. If the energy absorbers are being replaced, remove the absorber-to-side rail bolts, retaining bolts and nuts, and remove.
  18.  
  19. Disassemble and repair or replace individual parts of the bumper as required.
  20.  
  21. Install the energy absorbers. Torque the side rail bolt to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm) and the retaining bolts and nuts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Position the adjusting shims in their original locations and install the bumper.
  24.  
  25. Install the bumper-to-energy absorber nuts.
  26.  
  27. Install the push-in retainers attaching the splash shield to the impact bar on each side.
  28.  
  29. Install the air deflector-to-radiator support screws.
  30.  
  31. Install the facia-to-fender bolts on each side.
  32.  
  33. Connect lamp wiring as required.
  34.  
  35. Install the wheel opening moulding-to-facia screws on each side.
  36.  
  37. Adjust as required:
  38.  
    1. To adjust bumper extension, add or remove shims.
    2.  
    3. Loosen energy absorber nuts and reposition for facia-to-grille gap.
    4.  
    5. Loosen facia-to-fender bolts for facia-to-fender gap.
    6.  


Rear Bumper

  1. Remove the facia-to-quarter panel nuts on each side.
  2.  
  3. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Disconnect lamp wiring as required.
  4.  
  5. Remove the facia-to-wheelhouse panel screws at wheel opening moulding on each side.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bumper-to-energy absorber nuts.
  8.  
  9. Note number and location of adjusting shims and remove.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bumper.
  12.  
  13. If the energy absorbers are being replaced, remove the absorber-to-side rail bolts, retaining bolts and nuts, and remove.
  14.  
  15. Disassemble and repair or replace individual parts of the bumper as required.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Assemble the bumper.
  2.  
  3. Install the energy absorbers. Torque the side rail bolt to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm) and the retaining bolts and nuts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).

  5. Position the adjusting shims in their original locations and install the bumper.
  6.  
  7. Install the bumper-to-energy absorber nuts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the facia-to-wheelhouse panel screws at wheel opening moulding on each side.
  10.  
  11. Raise the vehicle and support safely. Disconnect lamp wiring as required.
  12.  
  13. Connect lamp wiring as required.
  14.  
  15. Install the wheel opening moulding-to-facia screws on each side.
  16.  
  17. Adjust as required:
  18.  
    1. To adjust bumper extension, add or remove shims.
    2.  
    3. Loosen energy absorber nuts and reposition for height adjustment.
    4.  
    5. Loosen facia-to-quarter panel bolts for side gaps.
    6.
