REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Remove the ecm.
  2.  
  3. Remove the prom or mem-cal access panel.
  4.  
  5. Using the rocker type prom or mem-cal removal tool, engage 1 end of the prom or mem-cal carrier with the hook end of the tool. Press on the vertical bar end of the tool and rock the engaged end of the prom or mem-cal carrier up as far as possible.
  6.  
  7. Engage the opposite end of the prom or mem-cal carrier in the same manner and rock this end up as far as possible.
  8.  
  9. Repeat this process until the prom or mem-cal carrier and prom or mem-cal are free of the prom or mem-cal socket. The prom or mem-cal carrier with prom or mem-cal in it should lift off of the prom or mem-cal socket easily.
  10.  
  11. The prom or mem-cal carrier should only be removed by using the special prom or mem-cal removal tool. Other methods could cause damage to the prom or mem-cal or prom or mem-cal socket.
  12.  
  13. Before installing a new prom or mem-cal, be sure the new prom or mem-cal part number is the same as the old one or the updated number per a service bulletin.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the prom or mem-cal with the small notch of the carrier aligned with the small notch in the socket. Press on the prom or mem-cal carrier until the prom or mem-cal is firmly seated, do not press on the prom or mem-cal itself only on the prom or mem-cal carrier.

  3. Install the prom or mem-cal access cover and reinstall the ecm.
  4.  

FUNCTIONAL CHECK



  1. Turn the ignition switch to the on position.
  2.  
  3. Enter the diagnostic mode.
  4.  
  5. Allow a Code 12 to flash 4 times to verify that no other codes are present. This indicates that the prom or mem-cal is installed properly.
  6.  
  7. If trouble Code 51 occurs or if the service engine soon light in on constantly with no codes, the prom or mem-cal is not fully seated, installed backwards, has bent pins or is defective.
  8.  
  9. If not fully seated press down firmly on the prom or mem-cal carrier.
  10.  
  11. If installed backwards, replace the prom or mem-cal.
  12.  

Any time the prom or mem-cal is installed backwards and the ignition switch is turned on, the prom or mem-cal is destroyed.

  1. If the pins are bent, remove the prom or mem-cal straighten the pins and reinstall the prom or mem-cal. If the bent pins break or crack during straightening, discard the prom or mem-cal and replace with a new prom or mem-cal.
  2.  

To prevent possible electrostatic discharge damage to the prom or mem-cal or Cal-Pak, do not touch the component leads and do not remove the integrated circuit from the carrier.
