REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cross brace to strut towers, if equipped. Reinstall the inboard strut nuts.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air intake duct.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the cruise control assembly and the the shift control linkage.
  8.  
  9. Label and disconnect the following:
  10.  
    1. Transaxle neutral start and backup lamp switch
    2.  
    3. Transaxle electrical connector
    4.  
    5. Vehicle speed sensor and fuel pipe retainers
    6.  
    7. Vacuum modulator hose at the modulator
    8.  

  11. Remove the top transaxle-to-engine block bolts and install an engine support fixture.
  12.  
  13. Raise and safely support the vehicle. Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies and turn the steering wheel to the full left position.
  14.  
  15. Remove the right front ball joint nut and separate the control arm from the steering knuckle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the right halfshaft.
  18.  

Be careful not to allow the halfshaft splines to contact any portion of the lip seal.

  1. Using a medium prybar, remove the left halfshaft. Be careful not to damage the pan. Install halfshaft boot seal protectors.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolts at the transaxle and the nuts at the cradle member. Remove the left front transaxle mount.
  4.  
  5. Remove the right front mount-to-cradle nuts. Remove the left rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the torque strut bracket from the transaxle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the left rear transaxle mount. Remove the transaxle brace from the engine bracket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the stabilizer shaft link to control arm bolt.
  12.  
  13. Remove the flywheel cover, matchmark the flywheel-to-torque converter and remove the flywheel-to-converter bolts.
  14.  

Be sure to matchmark the flywheel-to-converter relationship for proper alignment upon reassembly.

  1. Remove the rear frame member-to-front cradle dog leg.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front left cradle-to-body bolt and the front cradle dog leg-to-right cradle member bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install a transaxle support fixture into position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cradle assembly by swinging it aside and supporting it with jackstand.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect and plug the oil cooler lines at the transaxle.
  10.  

One bolt located between the transaxle and the engine block is installed in the opposite direction.

  1. Remove the remaining lower transaxle-to-engine bolts and lower the transaxle from the vehicle.
  2.  

To install:

  1. Install the transaxle into the vehicle using the dowel pin as guide. Tighten the bolts to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the oil cooler lines and remove the support fixture.
  4.  
  5. Install the front left cradle-to-body bolts and replace the rear cradle-to-front cradle dog leg.
  6.  
  7. Install the flywheel and tighten the bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm). Replace the flywheel cove and tighten the bolts to 136 inch lbs. (15 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the right rear transaxle mount. Replace the engine support bracket-to-transaxle case bolts and tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the right front mount-to-cradle nuts. Replace the left rear transaxle mount-to-transaxle bolts and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Replace the bolts at the transaxle and the nuts at the cradle member. Replace the left front transaxle mount and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install both halfshafts.
  16.  
  17. Connect the control arm to the steering knuckle and tighten the right front ball joint nut.
  18.  
  19. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Lower the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Install the top transaxle-to-engine block bolts and remove the engine support fixture.
  22.  
  23. Connect the following:
  24.  
    1. Park/Neutral switch
    2.  
    3. Torque converter clutch
    4.  
    5. Vehicle speed sensor and fuel pipe retainers
    6.  
    7. Vacuum modulator hose at the modulator
    8.  

  25. Connect the cruise control assembly and the the shift control linkage.
  26.  
  27. Replace the air intake duct and install the cross brace to strut towers, if equipped.
  28.  
  29. Connect the wire connector at the Mass Air Flow sensor, if equipped.
  30.  
  31. Connect the negative battery cable.
  32.
