1967-69 MODELS

The identification number can be found on the right-side of the transmission on the lower servo cover.

1970-74 MODELS

The identification number is located on the right-side of the transmission torque converter housing.

Turbo Hydra-Matic (M-38)

The identification number is located in the center of the right-side, on the governor cover. The serial number begins with the letter J and is followed by another letter that shows the particular engine with which it is used. A two-digit number denoting the model year completes the identification number.

Turbo Hydra-Matic (M-40)

The identification number for this transmission is located on the right-side of the transmission case. The number begins with the letter P meaning Pontiac, followed by the engine code letter and completed with a two-digit number which signifies the model year.

MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS Borg Warner 3-Speed



The serial number is stamped on a boss located in the right rear corner of the extension housing.

Dearborn 3-Speed

The serial number is stamped on the lower left mounting flange of the case.

Muncie 3-Speed

The serial number is stamped on a boss directly above the filler plug.

Saginaw 3 and 4-Speed

The serial number is stamped on the lower left (1967-68) or on the lower right (1969-76) side of the transmission case near the rear of the cover. Later models (1977-78) have it stamped on the left side of the case, below the side cover. 1979 and later models have the number stamped on the upper right side of the transmission, near the rear.

Muncie 4-Speed

The Muncie serial number is stamped on the left (1967-68) or right (1969-76) of the case at the bottom of the side cover.
