On 1967 models, the vehicle serial number is located on a plate attached to the left front door hinge pillar.

On 1968-81 models, the vehicle serial number is located on a plate attached to the top of the instrument panel, left-hand side, visible through the windshield. The number is interpreted as follows:

1967-71 models



First digit: car division
 
Second and third digits: Series Number
 
Fourth and fifth digits: Body style code
 
Sixth digit: Year manufactured
 
Seventh digit: Plant
 
Eighth digit: Engine used
 
Ninth to thirteenth digits: Sequential serial number
 

1972-80 models


First digit: Car division
 
Second digit: Series number
 
Third and fourth digits: Body style code
 
Fifth digit: Engine used
 
Sixth digit: Year manufactured
 
Seventh digit: Plant
 
Eighth to thirteenth digits: Sequential serial number
 

1981 models


First digit: Nation of origin
 
Second digit: Manufacturer
 
Third digit: Division code
 
Fourth digit: Restraint system
 
Fifth digit: Series number
