Turn Signal Switch

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1967-68 Models



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the signal switch wiring from the wiring harness under the instrument panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the steering wheel.
  6.  
  7. If applicable, remove the shift lever.
  8.  
  9. Remove the four-way flasher lever arm.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the dial indicator housing and lamp assembly from the column.
  12.  
  13. Remove the mast jacket lower trim cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the C-ring and washers from the upper steering shaft.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the signal switch screws, move the switch counterclockwise, and remove it from the mast jacket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper support bracket assembly.
  20.  


CAUTION
Support the column; do not allow it to be suspended by the lower reinforcement only.

  1. Remove the wiring harness protector and clip, and reinstall the support bracket and finger-tighten the bolts.
  2.  
  3. Remove the shift lever bowl from the mast jacket and disconnect it from the wiring harness.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 3 lockplate screws, being careful not to lose the 3 springs.
  6.  
  7. Disassemble the switch and upper bearing housing from the switch cover.
  8.  
  9. Insert the upper bearing housing and switch assembly into the switch cover.
  10.  
  11. Align the switch and bearing housing with the mounting holes in the cover and install the 3 mounting screws.
  12.  
  13. Slide the springs onto the screws and install the lockplate over the springs. Tighten the screws 3 turns into the lockplate.
  14.  
  15. Position the switch wire through the shift lever bowl and place the upper end assembly on top of the bowl.
  16.  
  17. Place the shift lever bowl and signal switch assembly on top of the jacket, inserting the lockplate tangs into the slots.
  18.  
  19. Push down on the cover assembly and turn clockwise to lock the assembly into position.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the signal mounting screws.
  22.  
  23. Remove the mast jacket support bracket, then install the wiring, wiring cover, and clip, and install and tighten the support bracket.
  24.  
  25. Install a C-ring onto the shaft.
  26.  
  27. Install the dial indicator and lamp assembly on the column, if so equipped.
  28.  
  29. Install the mast jacket lower trim cover, if so equipped.
  30.  
  31. Install the four-way flasher knob and the turn signal lever.
  32.  
  33. Install the shift lever.
  34.  
  35. Install the steering wheel.
  36.  
  37. Connect the wiring and battery cable.
  38.  

1969-81 Models

  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim cover from the column.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cover from the shaft.
  6.  
  7. Using a compressing tool, compress the lockplate. With the plate compressed, pry out the snapring from its shaft groove and throw it away.
  8.  
  9. Slide the cancelling cam, spring, and washer off the shaft.
  10.  
  11. Push the four-way flasher knob in and unscrew it.
  12.  
  13. Remove the three switch mounting screws.
  14.  
  15. Pull the switch connector out of the bracket and wrap it with tape to prevent it from snagging.
  16.  
  17. If applicable, place tilt columns in the low position and remove the harness cover.
  18.  
  19. Remove the switch.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Reverse the removal procedure, being sure to use only the specified nuts and bolts. Using screws that are slightly too long could prevent the column from collapsing during a collision.
  2.  
  3. When installing the cancelling cam, spring, and washer, make sure that the switch is in neutral and that the flasher knob is out.
  4.  
  5. Use a compressing tool to compress the lockplate and install a new snapring.
  6.
