The 4-cylinder engine VIN code is stamped on the left side transmission mounting flange of the engine, directly above the starter.

The V6 VIN code for 1982-83 Firebirds is stamped at the top center of the engine block, behind the water pump. An optional engine VIN code is location in front of the engine block, right side, below the cylinder head.

The V6 VIN code for 1984-88 Firebirds is stamped on the left side transmission mounting flange of the engine. An optional engine VIN code location is also on the transmission mounting flange, directly above the main VIN code number.

The V8 engine VIN codes are normally on the front of the engine block, directly below the right cylinder head. The stamping contains nine positions, and are broken down as follows:



Position 1-GM car division identifier
 
Position 2-Model year code
 
Position 3-Car assembly plant code
 
Position 4 through 9-Assembly plant sequential number of vehicle
