Upper Control Arm

  1. Raise and support the truck on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Support the lower control arm with a floor jack.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel and tire.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin from the upper ball joint and loosen the stud nut one turn.
  8.  
  9. Install a spring compressor on the coil spring for safety.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the upper ball joint using a ball joint removal tool. Remove the nut from the ball joint and raise the upper arm to clear the steering knuckle. It may be necessary to remove the brake caliper and wire it to the frame to gain clearance.

  13. Remove the nuts securing the control arm shaft studs to the crossmember bracket and remove the control arm.
  14.  
  15. Tape the shims and spacers together and tap for proper reassembly.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Before tightening the nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm) for 1 / 2 ton trucks, or 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm) for 3 / 4 and 1 ton models. Have the front alignment checked, and adjusted.
