REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

A steering wheel puller can be made by drilling two holes in a piece of steel the same distance apart as the two threaded holes in the steering wheel. Sometimes an old spring shackle will have the right dimensions. Drill another hole in the center. Place a center bolt with the head against the steering shaft and a nut against the bottom of the homemade puller bar. Thread the two outer bolts into the holes into the wheel. Unscrew the nut on the center bolt to draw the wheel off the shaft.
- Disconnect the battery ground cable.
- Remove the horn button and the receiving cap, belleville washer and bushing (if equipped).
- Mark the steering wheel-to-steering shaft relationship.
- On 1975 and later models, remove the snapring from the steering shaft.
- Remove the nut and washer from the steering shaft.
- Remove the steering wheel with a puller.
- Installation is the reverse of removal. The turn signal control assembly must be in the Neutral position to prevent damaging the cancelling cam and control assembly. Tighten the nut to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm) for 1970-72 vehicles, or to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm) for 1973-79 vehicles.
