Neutral Safety Switch

The neutral safety switch prevents the engine from being started unless the transmission is in park or neutral. The switch is located on the steering column.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the harness connector from the switch.
  4.  
  5. Remove the switch mounting screws and remove the switch.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Position shift lever in neutral gate notch.
  2.  
  3. Insert a 0.096 inch (2.4mm) gauge pin to depth of 3 /8 inch (9.5mm) into switch gauge hole. Switch assembly is fixed in neutral position with internal plastic shear pin.
  4.  
  5. Assemble switch to column by inserting the switch carrier tang in the shift tube slot and fasten into position by assembling mounting screws to retainers. If retainer strips out it must be replaced.

  1. Remove the gauge pin.
  2.  
  3. Move the shift lever out of the neutral gate notch to the park gate position in order to shear the internal plastic pin in the switch.
  4.  
  5. Return shift lever to neutral gate notch.
  6.  
  7. Check that the switch 2.0mm gauge hole will freely admit 0.080 inch gauge pin to a depth of 3 /8 inch (9.5mm).

  9. If pin will not freely enter gauge hole, switch must be reset. See resetting procedure.
  10.  
  11. If pin freely enters gauge hole, reconnect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Resetting

This procedure should only be done if installation and adjustment instructions instructed that a reset was necessary.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the neutral safety switch's attaching screws.
  4.  
  5. Rotate switch on column and insert 0.096 inch (2.4mm) gauge pin to depth of 3 /8 (9.5mm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten switch attaching screws.
  8.  
  9. Repeat the installation and adjustment procedure.
  10.
