GM Full-Size Trucks 1980-1987 Repair Guide

See Figure 1

Never work on your truck's exhaust when it has just been used. The exhaust system reaches extremely high temperatures and can cause severe burns. Always allow the truck to cool completely before attempting any exhaust repair. The exhaust system is suspended by hangers attached to the frame members.

Annoying rattles and noise vibrations in the Exhaust System are usually caused by misalignment of parts. When aligning the system, leave all bolts or nuts loose until all parts are properly aligned, then tighten, working from front to rear.

Fig. Fig. 1: The crossover pipe runs from the manifolds to the catalytic converter, the intermediate pipe connects the converter to the muffler assembly, then the exhaust is taken over the axle and vented to the rear of the vehicle

When replacing a muffler, the tailpipe(s) should also be replaced.

Sealer such as 1051249, or equivalent, should be used at all clamped joint connections.

When jacking or lifting vehicle from frame side rails, be certain lift pads do not contact catalytic converter as damage to converter will result.
