REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Suburban and Sport Utility Models
  1. Open and support the tailgate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the four bolts securing hinge to body on each side.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring harness if so equipped.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the torque rod anchor plates on each side.
  8.  

It is necessary to remove the lower bolt only, then let the plate swing down.

  1. With an assistant, raise the tailgate part way, then disconnect the support cables from the tailgate.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tailgate by pulling the disconnected hinge from the body, then grasping the torque rod with one hand and pulling torque rod over the gravel deflector and lift off the tailgate.
  4.  
  5. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  6.

Fleetside Pick-Ups
  1. Open tailgate half way.
  2.  
  3. Remove both of the retaining straps.
  4.  
  5. Lift up the tailgate at the right side and pull out at the left side to remove tailgate assembly.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.  

Stepside Pick-ups
  1. Unhook the tailgate chain assembly at each side.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolt and lock washer from each trunnion in carrier box tailgate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tailgate.
  6.  
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  8.
