Tailgate

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Pick-Ups
1988-91 MODELS
  1. Open the tailgate and support it with something like sawhorses.
  2.  
  3. Pull up on the side links at the joints.
  4.  
  5. Remove the attaching bolts and remove the link and striker plate from each end of the tailgate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hinge-to-tailgate bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tailgate.
  10.  
  11. Installation of the tailgate is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  12.  

1992-96 MODELS

See Figure 1

  1. Lower the tailgate to the horizontal position.
  2.  
  3. Move the tailgate to the 45° position and support it while disconnecting the cable from each side at the striker bolts.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the tailgate from the right and then the left side hinge and then remove the gate.
  6.

  1. To install, position the tailgate into the hinges at 45° angle and then connect the cable.
  2.  

Blazer/Jimmy/Yukon
1988-91 MODELS
  1. Place the tailgate in the closed position and lower the window.
  2.  
  3. Remove the torque rod-to-frame stud and nut and allow the torque rod to swing down.
  4.  
  5. Open the tailgate and support it with something like a picnic table, so there is no tension on the support cables.
  6.  
  7. Remove the attaching screws and remove the tailgate inner cover.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors in the tailgate.
  10.  
  11. Remove the support cables-to-pillar attaching bolts, spacers and washers.
  12.  
  13. Remove the torque rod brackets.
  14.  
  15. Remove the hinge-to-floor panel bolts.
  16.  
  17. Lift the tailgate off, guiding the torque rods over the gravel deflectors.
  18.  

To install:
  1. Position the tailgate, guiding the torque rods over the gravel deflectors. Insert the hinges into the floor panel slots.
  2.  
  3. Install the hinge-to-floor panel bolts. Make them snug.
  4.  
  5. Install the torque rod brackets.
  6.  
  7. Install the support cables-to-pillar attaching bolts, spacers and washers.
  8.  
  9. Connect the wiring harness connectors in the tailgate.
  10.  
  11. Install the tailgate inner cover.
  12.  
  13. Close the tailgate.
  14.  
  15. Install the torque rod-to-frame stud and nut.
  16.  
  17. Align the tailgate in the opening and tighten the hinge bolts securely.
  18.  

1992-96 MODELS
  1. Open the tailgate and remove the torque rod.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the window electrical harness.
  4.  
  5. Support the gate and remove the cable support bolts and washers.
  6.  
  7. Spread the hinge pin clip enough to get it above the recess in the pin. Remove the pins and lift out the gate. Be careful, the pin will fall off as the pin comes out.
  8.  
  9. Install the gate and the hinge pins. Connect the cables and install the torque rod.
  10.  

Suburban
1988-91 MODELS

See Figure 2

  1. Open the tailgate and support it with something like a picnic table, so there is no tension on the support cables.
  2.  
  3. Unbolt the torque rod bracket.
  4.

  1. Remove the attaching screws and remove the tailgate inner cover.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors in the tailgate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hinge access cover and seal.
  6.  
  7. Lift the tailgate to the almost-closed position, hold it there, and remove the hinge-to-tailgate bolts.
  8.  
  9. Lower the tailgate and support it so there is no tension on the cables and remove the support cables-to-pillars attaching bolts and washers.
  10.  
  11. Lift the tailgate off, along with the torque rod.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Position the tailgate, along with the torque rods, in the opening, aligning the hinges.
  2.  
  3. Install the support cables-to-pillar attaching bolts, spacers and washers.
  4.  
  5. Install the hinge-to-floor panel bolts. Tighten them securely.
  6.  
  7. Install the hinge cover and seal.
  8.  
  9. Connect the wiring harness connectors in the tailgate.
  10.  
  11. Install the torque rod brackets.
  12.  
  13. Install the tailgate inner cover.
  14.  

1992-96 MODELS
  1. Open the tailgate and remove the torque rod.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the window electrical harness.
