Axle Tube Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Remove the right wheel.
  4.  
  5. Position a drain pan under the axle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer bar.
  8.  
  9. Remove the skid plate.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the right inner tie rod end at the relay rod.
  12.  
  13. Remove the axle shaft flange bolts, turn the wheel to loosen the axle from the axle tube, push the axle towards the front of the truck and tie it out of the way.
  14.  
  15. Unplug the indicator switch and actuator electrical connectors.
  16.  
  17. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid from the case.
  18.  
  19. Remove the axle tube-to-frame mounting bolts.
  20.  
  21. Remove the axle tube-to-carrier bolts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the axle tube/shaft assembly. Keep the open end up.
  24.  
  25. Position the axle tube, open end up, in a vise by clamping on the mounting flange.
  26.  
  27. Remove the snapring, sleeve, connector and thrust washer from the shaft end.
  28.  
  29. Tap out the axle shaft with a plastic mallet.
  30.  
  31. Turn the tube, outer end up, and pry out the deflector and seal.
  32.  
  33. Using a slide hammer and bearing remover adapter, remove the bearing.
  34.  
  35. Clean all parts in a non-flammable solvent and inspect them for wear or damage. Clean off all old gasket material.
  36.  

To install:
  1. Using a bearing driver, install the new bearing in the tube. Apply axle lubricant to the bearing.
  2.  
  3. Coat the lips of a new seal with wheel bearing grease and tap it into place in the tube.
  4.  
  5. Install the deflector.
  6.  
  7. Insert the axle shaft into the tube.
  8.  
  9. Coat the thrust washer with grease to hold it in place and position it on the tube end. Make sure the tabs index the slots.
  10.  
  11. Install the sleeve, connector and snapring.
  12.  
  13. Position a new gasket, coated with sealer, on the carrier. Raise the tube assembly into position and install the tube-to-carrier bolts. Tighten the bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the axle shaft flange bolts and tighten them to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the axle tube-to-frame bolts. Tighten the nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) for 15 and 25 series; 107 ft. lbs. (145 Nm) for 35 series.
  18.  
  19. Connect the tie rod end to the relay rod. Tighten the nut to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the stabilizer bar. Tighten the brackets to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm), and the links to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect the actuator and switch.
  24.  
  25. Install the drain plug. Tighten it to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Fill the axle and tighten the filler plug to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Install the skid plate. Tighten the bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
