Stabilizer Bar

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Special tool J-36202, or its equivalent, is necessary for this procedure.

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.

  1. Remove the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Remove the stabilizer bar-to-frame clamps.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer bar-to-lower control arm bolts, nut/grommet assemblies and spacers.
  6.  

The bolts, spacers and nuts are not interchangeable from side-to-side. Keep them separated.

  1. Remove the stabilizer bar and bushings.
  2.  
  3. Check the bushings for wear or splitting. Replace any damaged bushings.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of removal, but please note the following important steps.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the both torsion bar adjustment bolt positions.
  4.  
  5. Using tool J-36202, increase the tension on the adjusting arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove the adjustment bolt and retaining plate.
  8.  
  9. Move the tool aside.
  10.  
  11. Slide the torsion bars forward.
  12.  
  13. Coat the stabilizer bar bushings with silicone grease and install them on the stabilizer bar. Note, the split in the bushing faces forward.
  14.  
  15. When all fasteners are installed, tighten the frame clamp bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm); the end link bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

  17. Using tool J-36202, increase tension on both torsion bars.
  18.  
  19. Install the adjustment retainer plate and bolt on both torsion bars.
  20.  
  21. Set the adjustment bolt to the marked position.
  22.  
  23. Release the tension on the torsion bar until the load is taken up by the adjustment bolt.
