REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1988-91 Models
  1. Remove the column shroud halves.
  2.  
  3. Remove the column-to-dash attaching bolts and slowly lower the steering column, making sure that it is supported.
  4.  
  5. Make sure that the switch is in the Lock position. If the lock cylinder is out, pull the switch rod up to the stop, then go down one detent.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the actuating rod from the switch.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two screws and the switch.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Before installation, make sure the switch is in the Lock position.
  2.  
  3. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  4.  

1992-94 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Lower the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Remove the washer head screw and the hexagon nut.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the dimmer switch assembly from the rod.
  8.  
  9. Unfasten the dimmer and ignition switch mounting stud.
  10.  
  11. Seperate the ignition switch from the actuator rod.
  12.  
  13. Unplug the ignition switch electrical connection and remove the switch.
  14.  

To install:

The new ignition switch will come in the OFF-LOCK position. Once the switch is assembled on the column, remove the plastic pin from the switch. If you are installing the old switch, make sure it is in the OFF-LOCK position.

  1. Attach the switch to the actuator rod.
  2.  
  3. Move the switch slider to the extreme left position, then move the slider one detent right to the OFF-LOCK position. Install the dimmer switch mounting stud and tighten to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the dimmer switch to the rod, then install the washer head screw and hexagon nut. Do not fully tighten at this time.
  6.  
  7. Place a 3 / 32 inch drill bit in the hole on the dimmer switch. Position the switch on the column and push against the rod to eliminate all lash.
  8.  
  9. Install the switch and tighten the screw and nut to 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Attach the switch electrical connection.
  12.  
  13. Raise and attach the steering column.
  14.  
  15. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper switch operation.
  16.  

1995-98 Models

  1. Remove the column shroud halves.
  2.  
  3. Remove the column-to-dash attaching bolts and slowly lower the steering column, making sure that it is supported.
  4.  
  5. Remove the multi function switch if necessary.
  6.  
  7. Remove the key alarm switch, if equipped by gently prying the alarm switch retaining clip with a small screwdriver. Rotate the alarm switch 1 / 4 in. turn and remove.

WARNING
Extreme care is necessary to prevent damage to the collapsible column.

  1. Make sure that the switch is in the Lock position. If the lock cylinder is out, pull the switch rod up to the stop, then go down one detent.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the actuating rod from the switch.
  4.  
  5. Remove the two screws and the switch.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Before installation, make sure the switch is in the Lock position.
  2.  
  3. Attach the actuating rod to the switch.
  4.  
  5. Install the switch using the original screws. Tighten the screws to 12 inch. lbs. (1.4 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the key alarm switch, if equipped . Make sure the retaining clip is parallel to the lock cylinder. Rotate the alarm switch 1 / 4 in. turn until locked in place.
  8.  
  9. Install the multi function switch if removed.
  10.  


CAUTION
Use of screws that are too long could prevent the column from collapsing on impact.

  1. Replace the column. Tighten the nuts to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm); the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the column shroud halves.
  4.
