ADJUSTMENT



See Figure 1

Before attempting parking brake adjustment, make sure that the rear brakes are fully adjusted by making several stops in reverse.

  1. Raise and support the rear axle. Release the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. On 1967-70 models, apply the brake 2 notches. On 1971-75 models, apply the pedal 1 click, On 1976 and later models, apply the pedal 4 clicks.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the cable equalizer nut under the truck until a moderate drag can be felt when the rear wheels are turned forward.
  6.

  1. Release the parking brake and check that there is no drag when the wheels are turned forward.
  2.  

If the parking brake cable is replaced, pre-stretch it by applying the parking brake hard about three times before attempting adjustment.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Front Cable
  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove adjusting nut from equalizer.
  4.  
  5. Remove retainer clip from rear portion of front cable at frame and from lever arm.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect front brake cable from parking brake pedal or lever assemblies. Remove front brake cable. On some models, it may assist installation of new cable if a heavy cord is tied to other end of cable in order to guide new cable through proper routing.
  8.  
  9. Install cable by reversing removal procedure.
  10.  
  11. Adjust parking brake.
  12.  

Center Cable

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove adjusting nut from equalizer.
  4.  
  5. Unhook connector at each end and disengage hooks and guides.
  6.  
  7. Install new cable by reversing removal procedure.
  8.  
  9. Adjust parking brake.
  10.  
  11. Apply parking brake 3 times with heavy pressure and repeat adjustment.
  12.  

Rear Cable

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2.  
  3. Remove rear wheel and brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Loosen adjusting nut at equalizer.
  6.  
  7. Disengage rear cable at connector.
  8.  
  9. Bend retainer fingers.
  10.  
  11. Disengage cable at brake shoe operating lever.
  12.  
  13. Install new cable by reversing removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Adjust parking brake.
