REMOVAL & INSTALLATION




WARNING
Many solid state electrical components utilized in these vehicles can be damaged by Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Some of these vehicles will display a label informing you that they will be damaged by ESD and some will not have labels, but they may be damaged also. To avoid possible damage to any of these components, follow the steps outlined below in Handling Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Sensitive Parts.

1987-90 Models

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Reach up behind the cluster, depress the speedometer cable retaining tang and pull out the cable.
  4.  
  5. On G-series models, remove the clock set stem knob.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cluster bezel retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Remove the cluster bezel.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster retaining screws.
  12.  
  13. Pull the top of the cluster away from the panel and lift out the bottom of the cluster. Pull the cluster out just far enough to unplug the wiring and remove the cluster.

To install:
  1. Engage the wiring harness and install the cluster in the panel.
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster retaining screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the bezel and tighten the retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. On G-series models, install the clock set stem knob.
  8.  
  9. Connect the speedometer cable.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
  12.  

1991-95 Models

See Figure 2

  1. Set the parking brake, block the wheels and place the transmission in LOW gear.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. If equipped, tilt the steering wheel to the fully down position.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, remove the rear heater and fan control knobs.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the bezel screws and remove the bezel.
  10.  
  11. Llosen the cluster screws, slide the cluster forward and disengage the electrical connections.
  12.  
  13. Remove the cluster.
  14.

To install:
  1. Engage the electrical connections and install the cluster. Tighten the screws to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the bezel and tighten the screws.
  4.  
  5. If removed, install the heater and fan control knobs.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Set the transmission in PARK .
  10.  
  11. Check for proper operation.
  12.  

1996-97 Models

See Figure 3

  1. Set the parking brake, block the wheels and place the transmission in LOW gear.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the instrument cluster lower trim filler trim panel and trim panel.
  6.  
  7. If equipped, tilt the steering wheel to the fully down position.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the cluster screws, slide the cluster forward and disengage the electrical connections.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster.
  12.

To install:
  1. Engage the electrical connections and install the cluster. Tighten the screws to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the cluster trim pane and filler trim panel.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Set the transmission in PARK .
  8.  
  9. Check for proper operation.
  10.
