REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front Cable

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. On 1996-97 models, perform the brake lever pin-up procedure, as described earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove adjusting nut from equalizer.
  6.  
  7. Remove retainer clip from rear portion of front cable at frame and from lever arm.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the front brake cable from the parking brake pedal. Remove the front brake cable. On some models, it may assist installation of a new cable if a heavy cord is tied to the other end of the old cable before removal, to help route it properly.
  10.  
  11. Install the cable by reversing the removal procedure.
  12.  
  13. Adjust parking brake.
  14.  

Rear Cable

  1. Raise the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  2.  
  3. On 1996-97 models, perform the brake lever pin-up procedure, as described earlier in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove rear wheel and brake drum.
  6.  
  7. Loosen adjusting nut at equalizer.
  8.  
  9. Disengage rear cable at connector.
  10.  
  11. Bend the retainer fingers.
  12.  
  13. Disengage the cable at the brake shoe operating lever.
  14.  
  15. Install the new cable by reversing the removal procedure.
  16.  
  17. Adjust the parking brake.

1987-95 Models

Before attempting parking brake adjustment, make sure that the rear brakes are fully adjusted by making several stops in reverse.

  1. Raise and support the rear axle. Release the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Apply the pedal 4 clicks.
  4.  
  5. Adjust the cable equalizer nut under the vans until a moderate drag can be felt when the rear wheels are turned forward.
  6.  
  7. Release the parking brake and check that there is no drag when the wheels are turned forward.
  8.  

If the parking brake cable is replaced, prestretch it by applying the parking brake hard about three times before attempting adjustment.

1996-97 Models
  1. Place the parking brake lever in the full up position.
  2.  
  3. Refer to the accompanying illustration and adjust the threads on the equalizer as follows:

    Passenger/Cargo to 0.511 in. (13mm)
     
    Cutaway/Upfitters to 1.062 in. (27mm)
     

  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle and check the parking brake will hold the vehicle by applying the lever,
  6.  
  7. If further adjustment is necessary, raise the vehicle and adjust the equalizer nut in 0.196 in. (5mm) increments until a moderate drag is reached on the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Back off the adjuster nut until the drag is no longer there, lower the vehicle and check the parking brake will hold the vehicle by applying the lever.
