Coolant Temperature Sensor

OPERATION



The coolant temperature sensor changes resistance as the coolant temperature increases and decreases. The coolant sensor can be found at these different locations as follows:

1987-93 models:



4.3L engines: in the left cylinder head between spark plugs # 3 and 5
 
5.0/5.7L engines: in the left cylinder head above the # 1 spark plug
 
7.4L engines: in the left cylinder head above the # 3 spark plug
 
Diesel engines: near the front of the left cylinder head before the exhaust manifold
 

1994-97 models:

See Figure 1

Gasoline engines: in the middle of the cylinder head on the driver's side
 
Diesel engines: in the left front of the cylinder head
 

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the engine coolant.
  2.  
  3. If necessary to gain access to the sensor, the engine cover may have to be removed.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the sensor electrical lead and unscrew the sensor..
  6.  

To install:
  1. Install the sensor and connect the electrical lead.
  2.  
  3. Install the engine cover.
  4.  
  5. Connect the battery cable and fill the engine with coolant.
  6.
