REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



1987-94 Models

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  6.  
  7. Place a drain pan under the gear and disconnect the fluid lines. Cap the openings.
  8.  
  9. Remove the flexible coupling pinch bolt (708 models) or the cardan joint clip bolt and nut (710 models).
  10.  
  11. On 710, remove the cardan joint from the steering gear stub shaft.
  12.  
  13. Mark the relationship of the Pitman arm to the Pitman shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the Pitman shaft nut and then remove the Pitman arm from the Pitman shaft, using a puller.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering gear to frame bolts and remove the gear assembly.
  18.

To install:
  1. Place the steering gear in position, guiding the wormshaft into flexible coupling. Align the flat in the coupling with the flat on the wormshaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering gear to frame bolts and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm) on the 708 models and 175 ft. lbs. (277 Nm) on the 710 models.
  4.  
  5. On 708 models, install the coupling pinch bolt. Tighten the pinch bolt to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  6.  
  7. On 710 models, install the cardan joint to the steering gear and tighten the bolt to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the Pitman arm.
  10.  
  11. Connect the fluid lines and refill the reservoir. Bleed the system.

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  6.  
  7. Place a drain pan under the gear and disconnect the fluid lines. Cap the openings.
  8.  
  9. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  10.  
  11. Matchmark the relationship of the cardan yoke to the stub shaft.
  12.  
  13. Remove the Pitman shaft nut and then remove the Pitman arm from the Pitman shaft, using a puller.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering gear to frame bolts and remove the gear assembly.
  16.  

To install:
  1. Place the steering gear in position, guiding the wormshaft into flexible coupling. Align the flat in the coupling with the flat on the wormshaft.
  2.  
  3. Install the steering gear to frame bolts and tighten to 98 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Tighten the pinch bolt to 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the Pitman arm onto the Pitman shaft.
  8.  
  9. Connect the fluid lines and refill the reservoir. Bleed the system.
  10.
