Fig. Fig. 1: Location and mounting of the front wheel speed sensor

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Detach the front sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Unfasten the retaining bolt, then remove the front wheel speed sensor. If the sensor will not slide out of the knuckle, remove the brake rotor and use a blunt punch or equivalent to push the sensor from the back side of the knuckle.
  8.

If the sensor locating pin breaks off and remains in the knuckle during removal, remove the brake rotor and remove the broken pin using a blunt punch. Clean the hole using sand paper wrapped around a screwdriver or other suitable tool. NEVER attempt to enlarge the hole.

To install:
  1. Position the front wheel speed sensor on the mounting bracket.
  2.

Make sure the front wheel speed sensor is properly aligned and lays flat against the bracket bosses.

  1. Install the retaining bolt. Tighten to 107 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2.
  3. Attach the front sensor electrical connector.
  4.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

Fig. Fig. 2: The rear wheel speed sensor and bearing are integral; they are replaced as a single unit

The speed sensors for the rear wheels are integrated into the hub/wheel bearing assembly. The assembly is not serviceable, and must be replaced as a unit.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  6.
  7. Remove the brake drum.
  8.
  9. Detach the rear sensor electrical connector.
  10.
  11. Unfasten the bolts and nuts attaching the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor assembly to the backing plate.
  12.

With the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor attaching bolts and nuts removed, the drum brake assembly is supported only by the brake line connection. To avoid bending or damage to the brake line, do not bump or exert force on the assembly.

  1. Remove the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor assembly.
  2.

To install:
  1. Install the rear wheel bearing and speed sensor assembly by aligning the bolt holes in the wheel bearing and speed sensor assembly, drum brake assembly and rear suspension bracket.
  2.
  3. Install the attaching bolts and nuts. Tighten to 44 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
  4.
  5. Attach the rear speed sensor electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Install the brake drum and the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  8.
  9. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  10.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
