Refer to the ignition system diagnosis chart pertaining to your engine in this section.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



3.0L Engine

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil.
  4.

  1. Unfasten the 6 Torx screws retaining the coil to the ignition module.
  2.  

Note or mark the lead colors for reassembly purposes.

  1. Tilt the coil assembly back, then detach the coil-to-module connectors and remove the coil assembly from the engine.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Attach the coil-to-module connectors, then install the coil assembly securing it with the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the spark plug wires to the coil, as tagged during removal.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

3.1L Engine

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Tag and detach the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the two screws retaining each coil to the Ignition Control Module (ICM), then remove the coil(s) from the module.

To install:
  1. Position the ignition coil(s) to the module, then install the retaining screws. Tighten the screws to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  2.  

Do not substitute other screws that what is used by the manufacture to attach the ignition coils.

  1. Attach the spark plug wires as tagged during removal.
  2.  
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  

3.3L Engine

See Figure 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 2 retaining bolts securing each coil to the ignition module/Ignition Control Module (ICM).
  6.  
  7. Remove the coil(s) from the vehicle by lifting them off the module.
  8.

To install:
  1. Fit the coil(s) to the ignition module/ICM.
  2.  
  3. Install the retaining bolts, then tighten them to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Attach the spark plug wires as tagged during removal.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.
