REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the camshaft cover. For details, please refer to the procedure located in this section.
  4.  
  5. Hold the valves in place with compressed air, using air adapter J 22794 or equivalent in the spark plug hole.
  6.  
  7. Compress the valve springs using J 33302-25 or other suitable valve spring compressor.
  8.  
  9. Remove rocker arms and valve lash compensators. Keep them in order if they are being reused.
  10.  
  11. The installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Make sure to keep the rocker arms and valve lash compensators in their original positions if they are being reused.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable and check for proper operation.
  14.  

2.5L Engine See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover. For details, please refer to the procedure located in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rocker arm bolt and ball. If replacing the pushrod only, loosen the rocker arm bolt and swing the arm clear of the pushrod.

  1. Remove the rocker arm, pushrod and guide. Store all components in order so they can be reassembled in their original location. Pushrod guides are different and must be reassembled in the previous location.

  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. When new rocker arms or balls are used, coat the bearing surfaces with Molykote or equivalent. Tighten the rocker arm bolts to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).

3.0L and 3.3L Engines See Figures 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover. For details, please refer to the procedure located in this section.

  5. Remove the rocker arm pedestal retaining bolts.
  6.

  1. Remove the rocker arm and pedestal assembly. Note the position of the double ended bolts for reassembly. Store all components on a clean surface in order so they may be installed in their original locations.

  3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace any components that show signs of unusual wear. For the 3.0L engine, tighten the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (60 Nm). Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) and addition 70° turn for the 3.3L engine.

3.1L Engine See Figure 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rocker arm cover as outlined previously in this section.
  4.  
  5. Some types you remove the rocker arm nuts, balls, rocker arms.
  6.

  1. On other types of rocker arms, remove the bolts, pivot balls and arms.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Clean all the gasket surfaces completely.
  2.  
  3. Coat all the valve train components with engine oil prior to installation.
  4.  
  5. Install the pushrods and install the rocker arms on the studs. Install the rocker arm balls and mounting nuts. Make sure the pushrods are properly seated in the lifter and rocker arm. Tighten the mounting nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm). Or tighten the mounting bolts to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and an additional 30°.

  7. Install the rocker arm cover using a new gasket and tighten the rocker cover bolts to specification.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the vehicle and verify that there are no leaks.
