REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Front Speakers
DASH MOUNTED

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. For 1985-87 vehicles, remove the light and wiper switches, then unfasten the air deflectors and trim.
  4.  
  5. Remove the speaker/defroster grille or dash pad from the instrument panel.
  6.

  1. Unfasten the speaker attaching screws.

  1. Lift the speaker partially out, then detach the electrical connector(s).
  2.

  1. Remove the speaker.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker electrical connector(s).
  2.  
  3. Place the speaker into position, then secure using the attaching screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the speaker/defroster grille or dash pad to the instrument panel.
  6.  
  7. For 1985-87 vehicles, connect the light and wiper switches, then install the air deflectors and trim.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

DOOR MOUNTED
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the door trim panel. Refer to the procedure in Routine Maintenance .
  4.  
  5. Unfasten the door speaker retaining screws, then pull the speakers out to detach the electrical connector.
  6.  

To install:
  1. Attach the speaker electrical connector, then position it into the recess in the door.
  2.  
  3. Secure the speaker using the retaining screws. Be sure not to overtighten and strip the screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the door trim panel.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Rear Speakers
1985-90 VEHICLES

See Figures 4, 5 and 6

The rear speakers for 1985-90 vehicles are serviced from inside the trunk area.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. From inside the trunk, unfasten the retainer, then remove the speaker cover.
  4.

  1. Remove the speaker by sliding the lever on the speaker bracket out of the clip, then carefully lower the speaker.

  1. Detach the speaker electrical wires, then remove the speaker assembly from the vehicle.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Attach the electrical wires to the speaker.
  2.  
  3. Position the speaker into the bracket, then hold the speaker against the shelf in its proper position and slide the lever on the speaker retainer into the clip.
  4.  
  5. Install the speaker cover, then close the trunk lid.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

1991-98 VEHICLES

See Figure 7

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear seat cushion by unfasten the bolts from the bracket at the front of the seat.
  4.  
  5. Grasp the seat cushion and lift up and outward, then remove the cushion from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the anchor bolts from the bottom of the seatback securing the rear seat retainers and center seat safety belts.
  8.  
  9. Grasp the bottom of the seatback and swing upward to disengage the offsets on the back upper frame bar from the hangers; lift the seatback upward to remove.
  10.  
  11. If equipped with 4 doors, remove the upper rear quarter interior trim panels by performing the following:
    1. Disconnect the tabs on the trim pale from the slots in the body by grasping the trim panel and pulling toward the front of the car.
    2.  
    3. Remove the trim panel by rotating it inboard.
    4.

  13. If equipped with 4 doors, remove the lower rear quarter interior trim panels by performing the following:
    1. Unfasten the 2 attaching screws.
    2.  
    3. Remove the trim panel by grasping the panel and pulling it inboard to disengage the tabs from the retainers.
    4.

  15. If equipped with 2 doors, remove the lower rear quarter interior trim panels by performing the following:
    1. Detach the carpet retainer by removing the screws and lifting up on the carpet retainer.
    2.  
    3. Remove the upper windshield molding by grasping the molding and pulling down to disengage the molding from the clips.
    4.  
    5. Unfasten the trim panel attaching screws, then remove the trim panel by grasping the panel and pulling it inboard.
    6.

  17. Remove the center high-mount stop light by removing the screws, lifting the light, then detaching the electrical connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the rear seat back-to-window panel by sliding the panel out from under the remaining quarter trim.
  20.  
  21. Disconnect the speaker harness.
  22.  
  23. Unfasten the speaker attaching screws, then remove the speaker assembly by lifting and sliding the assembly out of the slots.
  24.  
  25. Remove the speaker from the retainer by removing the screws.
  26.

To install:
  1. Install the speaker to the retainer and secure using the attaching screws.
  2.  
  3. Attach the speaker assembly by inserting the tabs into the slots.
  4.  
  5. Install the speaker retainer assembly attaching screws.
  6.  
  7. Attach the speaker electrical connectors.
  8.  
  9. Fasten the rear seat-to-back window trim panel by sliding the panel under the quarter trim.
  10.  
  11. Install the center high-mount stop light by connecting the electrical connector, positioning the assembly and installing the attaching screws.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with 2 doors, install the lower rear quarter interior trim panels by performing the following:
    1. Align the fasteners to the retainers in the body and pushing outboard on the panel.
    2.  
    3. Install the two attaching screws.
    4.  
    5. Install the upper windshield molding by starting at the top rear of the body lock pillar and engaging the tabs on the molding clips in the body.
    6.  
    7. Install the carpet retainer.
    8.  

  14.  
  15. If equipped with 4 doors, install the lower upper rear quarter interior trim panels by performing the following:
    1. Align the tabs to the retainers and press the trim panel until the tabs are fully engaged to the retainers.
    2.  
    3. Install the attaching screws.
    4.  

  16.  
  17. If equipped with 4 doors, install the upper rear quarter interior trim panels by aligning the tabs in the slots, and pushing rearward and rotating outboard.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear seat back by aligning the seat back and engaging the upper retaining hook. An audible snap will be heard to indicate proper engagement.
  20.  
  21. Install the safety belt anchors on the top of the seat retainer brackets. Install the attaching bolts and tighten to 28 ft. lbs. (38 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Install the rear seat by aligning to the proper position. Install the attaching bolts and tighten to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
